Looking for new rain layer, parka?
« on: December 19, 2021, 06:47:38 PM »
Question about rain gear for you guys.
I started hunting with a small sitka pack this year which worked fine. Was thinking on days where it's a real soaker it would be nice to get an oversized rain parka that goes over that pack and whatever I have for warmth layers.
What do you all suggest or what do you have that works well for you

I wear a Kuiu Yukon rain coat and Eberlestock pack cover that goes over my pack.

I have not had best of luck with pack over the jacket, possibly just need a better jacket.
Even with cover over sitka pack straps get soaked and where they put pressure seems to get wet.

Second the Kuiu Yukon.  I will sometimes wear my jacket over my pack, Badlands Diablo, helps with heat management.

To the OP.  Yes, a parka over the pack really does well.  The parka is cheap (find on Amazon for $20 or so), comes in many colors.  Look for Anyoo on Amazon.

When I am sitting, I use the parka to keep me both warm and dry.

Lots of rain?  No issues.  Lots of wind?  Terrible.

Next year I plan to try this while hiking with a pack http://www.thepacka.com/ When I hike with a rain coat wearing a pack I am carrying the full weight of the pack on my shoulders no matter how tight the pack belt is.That gets painful pretty quick

Poncho is pretty much the standard for rain gear that covers you and a pack.

I think it's easier to just put the stuff you want dry in some sort of plastic sack or drybag.  I tried the poncho thing and felt like an elephant lumbering through the woods getting hung up on every branch.

Now, I just feel like a lumbering elephant that doesn't get hung up nearly as much.  It also keeps the stuff dry all the time like when you put your pack in the snow, slip and land in the water or aren't wearing a raincoat.

Mostly I use dry storage in my pack if I need things dry and don't bother covering it. But I do have a pack cover just in case ..my pack is off and on so much I wouldn't bother with a poncho. Good rain gear for me has to fit just as good as my normal hunting gear and not be to baggy... baggy equals noisey, dead space is harder to heat, condensation develops...etc... :twocents:
