Trapping apprenticeship
« on: March 01, 2022, 10:02:08 PM »
I started trapping 4 years ago for some thing to do after I retired.  My 1st year was a bust. The 2nd year I had the corner on skunks.  Any time I set I had a skunk. I was able to roll over the traps and release them.  Last year I ran a saw across the end of my finger and didn't set any traps.
This last labor day I had a mini stroke and wasn't sure if I could get out.
Had my cameras still out.
Checked them a month ago and had a bobcat on one. So I hauled a trap up and set it. The first couple of hikes were almost a bit much.  I was thinking about pulling them.  But I refuse to just sit in a chair and so I persisted.
This morning I went to check them and after the fresh snow yesterday I had 3 different sets of bobcat tracks crossing the hill on my way.
When I got  close enough to see the trap the door was down.   Thought oh boy I hope it is not a skunk.
When I got close I saw a paw. Got up and looked inside. Success!!

Thank you to all the people that I bent their ears when I was getting started.  I bought traps from teacher man's father and spent about 2 hours sitting on his porch in Northport. I'm sure he was asking.  Is this guy ever gonna leave. 😆
I ran several of my thoughts past him and others. Enough of that.

I will say that skinning a bobcat is like cutting tissue paper off a grape.

Congrats.  That's pretty cool.  What else I find pretty cool is a friend and I built that trap.  We sold a couple of dozen to teacherman.  I assume that who you bought it from?  Or maybe our old traps are really making the rounds now.

 :yeah

I was picking up the traps from his dad's house in Northport.  Before he went up to Alaska.
