Pike/Lake trout rod recommendations??
« on: February 19, 2024, 01:35:25 PM »
I’ve mostly been fly fishing for the last several years but am headed to the Boundary Waters this fall and I need a spinning rod I can use for small to medium sized lake trout and pike. I’m thinking 7’ medium/fast action. Something that is sized for 12 pound test and it has to be a 2 piece rod. Because I’ll be flying with it, it can’t be a 1 piece rod. I’m very out of the loop these days with spinning gear and I don’t want to blow it on this. I’ve got the walleye/bass lighter action sized rods handled already. Going to bring 2 spinning rods and a fly rod.
Whats a good rod to go with? I’ve got $200 or so to play around with for a budget.
Thanks in advance.

Okuma rods are great topped with a Shimano. But you might want two rods if you will be living in a canoe

A Lamiglas "Bass" rod might fulfill your needs.  I raised my kid as a fly fishing snob, and in his 20's he turned to the dark side and started Chasing Pike in N Idaho.  He has a 2 piece 7'er bass rod that has both feel and some backbone.

A Few other good accounts for laker action, Jay Siemens, weavers bent rods, Daryl Gilbert outdoors.

I’ll have 2 rods for sure. Plus my 8 weight fly rod.

I have the fly rod and the lighter walleye rod already handled. Ive both smaller trout sized rods bigger salmon and steelhead here, but I don’t have that in between rod for the bigger pike and lakers.

Medium weight rod will work.  Lakers out there thatbtime of year you have to find deep water.  Like 50'.  I caught a 7 pounder through the ice in 100' of water through the ice many moons ago.  Going after pike make sure you have a leader because those teeth on a pike nicking your line will break off it a heart beat.  Look more at Jay Seimens YouTube channel he has some awesome tips for pike and lakers.
