NE turkey report

Went up east of Colville this morning.  Lots of gobbles on the roost and then shut down shortly after fly down. Strutters on private fields.  Did some walking and driving.  Found scattered hens all single or in groups of 2 or 3.  Didn’t seem to be rhyme or reason to where they were

First day out this season walked close to 15 miles and haven’t heard a single gobble. Still pretty windy and haven’t had one tick on me so far. Hoping the gobbling picks up.

My first thought this morning when they quit after fly down was they were henned up but after seeing all the stray hens I wonder if the breeding cycle has even started.  I assume it has because the Toms on private were strutting.  Thoughts?

SUPPOSEDLY, by starting the season the 15th vs. the 1st of April, allows for up to 60% of the hens to be bred.  I am seeing solo toms roaming the hill sides and an occasional tom with a handful of hens.  Cooler weather has definitely shut things down a lot.  Warmer weather next week should help.

Of course, activity varies  at every turn or bump in the road.

Well after a slow day we finally struck up a gobble around six and after a bit of calling my buddy killed his first gobbler.

Just watched a tom tonight with several hens in an alfalfa field by our house in Kirby Idaho.

I know this is a no brain 🧠 ,but might be overlooked.
Those hens will stick to there normal feeding and water hole.
Toms won't be far off from there.
Roost spots mourning/evening,food/water midday.

Haven't been NE, only East. Haven't seen 1 tick and I saw 4 Bull Elk today. All new growth and 1 of the 4 was 12" tall aready. Here's my best picture with my crumy cell phone. Also seen a hen drivng out with over an 11" beard today. It was dragging on the ground for goodness sake. I've shot my first tag of the year. Seems like most birds are fired up between 10:45 - 2:00 pm in my area.

Haven't run into any ticks down in south east washington, but I only hunted 3 days and my wife and I killed 3 big toms. All the birds we have seen have been in big groups (20+) besides Thursday when I shot my second bird he was by himself. Birds have been gobbling on the roost then shutting up once they hit the ground and then firing back up about 10 am

Hunting on some private in Valley, haven’t had a tom come by the blind in two days, damn cold in the mornings!  Hens and mostly solo ones.  Last year was my first time turkey hunting and it seemed much better on public land, odd. BUT, we hit the opener last year.  Two ticks so far, and the public fishing from shore sucks at jump off joe and deer lakes!!

Amazing that you are matching wits with something that has a brain the size of a walnut and you are loosing. But then it is food for everything in the food chain. It doesn't smell and can see 300 degrees. Can hear you scratching your fingers in the brush at over 200 yards. and can pinpoint your location from over a 1/4 mile. Oh ya you are in "his back yard".

I would guess that if I was standing on my back porch I could hear birds gobbling in several different directions.

Not to side track but yeah the fishing is horrible at those spots 😂 Growing up there we never wasted our time at them. Until fishing opener I’d say your best bet would be Roosevelt down at the boat launch outside Kettoe Falls it mouth of the Colville River. Could even see a few birds on the drive up. Once Waitts opens you are next to some of the best trout fish in the entire PNW.
