Early Archery Nile Unit

Anyone else headed up to Nile unit for early archery elk??
I drew cow tag,and planning on hunting in the rd 1791 area...

Grew up archery hunting the Nile Unit.  Loved it and need to return to see how much has changed.  Hope the elk herds are recovering and strong.  When we stopped hunting it, it was getting difficult to find elk and even more difficult to find deer.  In it's hay day, there were lots of critters running around.

Good luck that is the area I hunted last year with the same tag but this year I have the late tag. Should be a fun hunt. Lots of bears in that area; hope you have a bear tag!

Testament that our bear population is out of control.  40 years ago we almost never saw a bear in that unit.  They were there for sure.....but I have heard from multiple people that hunt that .410 corridor that the bear numbers are way up. 

Definitely make sure you have a bear tag (or two) and help save a fawn / calf.

That’s the truth, I’ve hunted this unit since 2003 and recently have been seeing lots of bears every season. My camera in the 1791 had 5 different bears on it last time I checked it a couple months ago.

I have a bear tag...so that would be great find blackie...its true,the deer have been dwindling more and more every year....the way the packs of coyotes,howl all night long,is a good indication, why the deer herds are taking a beating....we need to start a predator club,up there...I've got a brand new Remington. 223 just waiting to help the deer out....
The thing about the Nile,the last few years...I've seen more bulls than cows...unbelievable....I've got a few spikes on trailcams,so they are up there....thunderstorms up there,in the early hunt,always threaten fires...a bit nerve-wracking....

Not just coyotes but people let their domestic dogs run in some of the lower drainages off the 1600. My buddy was making a stalk on a buck last year and some dogs ran the deer right off the mountain.

Does the guy at the bottom of the hill on the 1600 (before the cattle guard) still own a mile past the cattle guard (before the feed station)?  I was always envious of his spread.  Never met him, but heard he wasn't the nicest guy to deal with.

yes, Matson still owns the first almost 2 miles of the Nile road

Attention muzzy elk hunters,don't expect too much in Nile unit...7 days,haven't seen an elk...1791 hunted pretty hard talked to 7 bowhunters,no elk...they're tough to locate this year...not even any coyotes howling...hope you have better luck than I...😁

Thanks for the update. I'm heading up there for muzzy season next week. I camped over Labor Day and it was eerily quiet and dry.

I’m a little wet behind the ears….. or are the 1700 roads in the little natcheze?  I thought the Nile was all 1600 roads.  It’s been a few years since I’ve been up there so maybe things have changed??? 

I also thought the 1700 roads (i.e. little Natchez unit was draw only for archery.

We hunted that unit three or four times, back before the fires. Saw couple cows during season. Camped up around Glass Creek, the elk were down in the Wilderness area .

Wolves started howling one night and poof. Nothing.

The north west end of the little natches is 1900 up toward quartz mountain if I'm not mistaken.  The lower (south western) part of the GMU is 1700 roads.  Again....It's been years since I've been there so I'm going off of my old mans memory. 

Regardless....I'm not sure the Nile unit has any 1700 roads, though I may learn something.  I'm just curious what unit the OP was talking about.  Even at it's worst.....The Nile always carried elk if you knew where to look for them.  The elk herds are doing pretty well throughout the state so I have to believe the nile unit is the same.
