dog training video/dvd
« on: July 21, 2009, 07:21:53 PM »
Can anyone suggest a training video/dvd for a retriever.  It's been a long time since I trained one and we have a 2 1/2 month old lab x golden we'd like to hunt with.  Mostly upland birds and maybe duck.  She shows some natural pointing ability and retrieves well.

Yes, here is a good dvd for the hunting retriever; Chris Akin "Duck Dog Basics". You can find it at Macks Prairie Wings website. A great tape for little costs too you.

Good Luck and enjoy the journey with you new pup! You may want to look into the many retriever clubs available in Washington. Most have organized monthly training days and can be a great resource for training of a gun dog.

The best starting DVD you can buy is Bill Hillmann training a retriever. He starts a training program with an 8 week old pup and takes you straight through every day, every training session until the dog is doing doubles and has some basic handling skills in place....awesome, worth every penny. I think its about $160.

Followed up by Evan Graham's series. You can find Evan's on Rush Creek Press.com.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
