How to quiet my QAD ultra-rest?
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:58:19 PM »
Hey Guys-

After using my last bow for almost 2 decades I broke down and got a new one a few months back.  I put a QAD Ultra-rest HD on it which works great, the only problem is it's loud.  When I release the only thing you hear is the rest falling and the arrow hitting the target.

The rest doesn't hit the shelf at all and I put the foam on it but it is still LOUD.  I couldn't find anything of much help online...

Thoughts?

Sorry, to ask this, but are you sure it's the rest that's making the loud noise?  I have the Ultra-rest Pro and I can't hear it at all.  I know it does make a sound because it hits the shelf, but what I do hear is the thump from the bow string, then the arrow hitting the target.  BTW, I'm shooting a Mission Eliminator.  You may have done this already, but you could confirm the sound by engaging the rest to full position with the lever (without an arrow and not drawing the string), then releasing the rest.  This may help rule out if it's the rest, s specific part of the rest release, or suggest something else/additional is generating the loud noise.

Oh, I'm absolutely certain it's the rest.  It's the exact same sound as if I disengage it manually using the thumblever.  I have a bowtech admiral and other than that rest falling there is no other noise/vibration.

Wow, that's peculiar.  Maybe something defective with the rest?  Being no bow expert myself I guess I would have someone look at it.  Wholesale Sports in Federal Way has always done a great job of getting the kinks out of my bow.

There're simply too many moving parts in a rest to make it dead silent.  However, you should be able to set it up to be plenty quiet enough.  The QAD drop aways that I've put on for friends have all made noise at first simply by my not having the launcher arm parallel to the shelf.  The key I've found when tuning their bows in is to pay close attention when moving the rest up and down so that it always stays parallel in the tripped position and doesn't end up at an angle causing the launcher arms to hit the top corner of the shelf only.  Once I've got it tuned well, then I put a piece of moleskin on the shelf where the arms will hit upon release.  This gets the best results that I know of.  You've got a very good rest, so don't give up on it.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

Thanks Todd, I'll try adding a piece of moleskin on the shelf and see if that helps.  I love the rest and don't plan on getting anything else... even if it is a little louder than I expected!

I have a QAD HD Pro on my Allegiance and I covered the shelf on mine with a material similar to Mole Skin, your not going to make it dead silent but it will help, putting mole skin on your riser shelf and up the riser by the mounting holes for the rest also keeps the arrows from hitting the riser and making load noises when loading an arrow.
