Ballistics for 30-06 model 700 w/ 150 g Remington Corelok bullets

My father always sighted in at 25 yds with the 30-06 shooting 150 g coreloks. I have seen my father drop elk, moose, and deer with this. He told me the reason for this sighting in is in the ballistics of the rifle and bullet.

So at 25 yds dead on
        100 yds 6 inch high
        200 yds dead on
        300 yds 6 inch low

Does this sound right or? I know it worked for him and I have been real successful with it as well but would like to check on this data.

No that doesn't sound right. It shouldn't be 6 inches high at 100 yards. I would expect 1 to 2 inches high at 100 yards with the other numbers you give.

dont know about the 150 but the 125 2 high at 100 is 5 low at 3,so 2 high at 100 with a 150 grain and 6 low at three sounds right

Those number look wrong to me, BUT here we go, I have a 2007 Remington factory book. the trajectorys are as follows.
first with a 150 yard zero. These are both Rem. 150 grain corelokt pointed soft point.

there ya go, the old 06 is a flatter shooter than folk think! 6 inch high at 100 would be on at like 300-350 yards!!

As stated, 6 inches high at a 100 doesn't match the other numbers.  I shoot 150 grain Hornadys through my 700.  handloads so a little hotter than Carls, but close...they are 2 inches high at 100, dead center at 250 and about 3 low at 300.  In my mind anythng under 300 I aim dead on and it will die.

Thanks everyone. I thought so. I was at the range the other day and shoot dead on at 25 yds and was 6 inches high at 100 yds. No test any further because that is the farthest range in Sammamish area, at the Issaquah range.

Now I know I will be in the kill zone 300 and back

You're leaving it sighted in that way   That's way too high at 100. At 200 it will be a lot higher. Run the numbers through a ballistic program to get an idea. But I'd guess you'll be at least a foot high at 200 yards if you leave it 6 inches high at 100.

Hmmmm - I was out again and numbers I originally reported were wrong. Thanks everyone for the help. I know that after 200 yds the bullet drops like a rock with a 30.06 So I do not see it going a foot high at 200 yds.

Was out with my kid and dead on at 25, 3 in high at 100. Looks good to me.

You're right. I ran it through a ballistic calculator and it would only be 9 inches high at 200 yards, if sighted in 6 inches high at 100 yards.  

Here's what you'd be looking at:

100 yards:  +6.0
200 yards:  +8.9
300 yards:  +6.2
400 yards:  -3.0
500 yards: -19.6


Oh, and I definitely disagree with the statement that with a 30-06 the bullet will "drop like a rock" past 200 yards. After 400 yards, maybe. But not 200. It's just about as flat shooting as anything else except for the "magnums."

Got to agree with bobcat, they sure don't drop like a rock past 200. Dead on at 25yds. is good for taking the head off Grouse. 40 to 50 and counting. LOL

Duly noted. I think I will be zeroing mine at 25 yards during certain times of year.
