The failures are painful!
If you don't want to risk grabbing the tail but the skunk is turning over on its back while in the trap (leghold), just shoot it when it gets on its back. They have a hard time getting upright anyway so once you shoot them, they will stay upside down and you will see their legs do a 'pressing' action in the air.
I know a guy who would use a hollow pole with a loop. It is simple, just loop the tail and then tighten and lift in one motion.
Where I trapped in SW Oregon, I had to get rid of most of the skunks first, then I could trap the foxes. I had lots of practice on skunks! A simple chicken egg is one of the best baits.
