I pay money to see either one of you guys do that.....upwind of course.

The failures are painful!
If you don't want to risk grabbing the tail but the skunk is turning over on its back while in the trap (leghold), just shoot it when it gets on its back. They have a hard time getting upright anyway so once you shoot them, they will stay upside down and you will see their legs do a 'pressing' action in the air.
I know a guy who would use a hollow pole with a loop. It is simple, just loop the tail and then tighten and lift in one motion.
Where I trapped in SW Oregon, I had to get rid of most of the skunks first, then I could trap the foxes. I had lots of practice on skunks! A simple chicken egg is one of the best baits.

You and BLKBEARKLR and just to sensitive.  You 2 stood 15' away the entire time and I didn't even bust a sack.   :dunno:

BLKBEARKLR had his camera in hand the whole time waiting for me to gag.  Not gonna happen.  Good try though you guys.  :chuckle:

Another way to try and kill a skunk without releasing the *censored* storm is to get a bat, sneak up behind it while it's in the trap and hit it hard and fast and break it's back, it will keep it from releasing the spray.

You ever try doing that while it is in a cage trap?  If so I'd like you to come with me when I catch once and show me how to bypass all the wire.  :chuckle:

This brings me back to a time when I was archery hunting for deer in SW OR. I came upon a skunk and it was (as usual) tending its business of finding food (even though it was fat). I picked up a rather large rock and threw it on top of the skunk. The rock was big enough to bounce the skunk onto its back. The rock crushed the skunk and killed it and because it was on its back, it could not spray. It was fun considering the fact that I don't like skunks all that much.

Another thing I learned to do with them is - once I shot one in a trap, I would reach out and grab the tail and lift it off the ground. The shot from the 22 would cause the skunk to give out an initial blast from hell, then there would be a pause and this is the time I would grab its tail and lift. After that, I never had anymore smell from the hell hole blasting out.

A person learns to hate these critters after about a hundred of them. I always did want one as a pet though.
