EVERETT, Wash. – Water falling from the ceiling was the first tip-off that something was wrong with Dean Rappleye's roof. Then it got worse.

"First of all they had to cut a large chunk of the sheet rock out and then pull out all of the insulation because it was all wet," said Rappleye.

And then he got a look at the outside of the roof.
"It was probably four, five, six different shakes had been torn physically from the roof, exposing the inside of the attic, a pretty good-sized hole," he said.

The damage was all caused by a furry little critter – a raccoon. Rappleye had seen one.

Furry little critter indeed! Don't pet it though.

"It took a lot of yelling and stomping and all kinds of noise to get him finally to move off," he said.

Sounds like somebody had a temper tandrum. Got video?

It didn't move far.

That is because it was being entertained.

Rappleye's next-door neighbor had damage too. He got a new roof, as did another neighbor two years ago.

"It's annoying at night when they're scattering above you and you can't sleep," said Rachel Schweitzer.

I can think of something else that 'scatters'.

"They would leave in the spring with the babies and eventually when we put the new roof in they can't get in any more," said Darwin Schweitzer.

Oh no! they are homeless! Poor little furry critters.

There's not much you can do. State law says you can't hunt or trap raccoons and each city has its own wildlife restrictions. Rappleye gets that homeowners and raccoons have to coexist.

I know what I would do Perhaps they should give the coons a room and a guitar so coexisting would be like the good ole days in the '60s.

"I'm a lover of nature but I've got to tell you they've changed my mind a little bit. I wouldn't be above throwing a shoe at them or something like that," he said.

Just don't use a high heel shoe. You could poke an eye out with one of those things.

State wildlife officials advise homeowners to keep garbage can lids tightly secured and remove pet food.

Oh now that is cruel! Starving wildlife just isn't right. How can we coexist when we starve them?

77.12.020), and eastern gray squirrels may be killed with the
express permission of the property owner at any time, to prevent
private property damage on private real property.

list of wildlife species may be killed with the express permission
of the owner, when causing damage to private property: Raccoon,
fox, bobcat, beaver, muskrat, mink, river otter, weasel, hare, and
cottontail rabbits.

Maybe I can send some of our coons to their neighborhood.  Ours all seem to have this odd little hole-in-the-skull birth defect.

I usually see 2 or 3 every night. The last few nights I've seen 2 missing most of their tails, one wound looked pretty fresh. Each only had about 3 inches of tail left...couple disapointed 'yotes somewhere..

I think they do this to each other. My neighbors have all had cats that got their tails bitten off by coons. I have killed dozens of coons that have had stubs for tails and I've seen many more.

Thanks CP for the WAC. Always good to have info like that on hand for protection against dummies who 'think' they know the law.

A .22 CB LONG WITH A POP BOTTLE SILENCER WILL CURE THE PROBLEM!!!Head shots,of course!!I hate coons,they are mean little buggers.I had one with no tail that was a tough guy!!!

I have only seen them along the road and usually been there a while and smelling bad.  Seen plenty of tracks though.

I've had CB shorts mushroom on the skull of one before at point blank range, though out of a little snub-nosed .22 that looks like a started pistol.  Years ago I contributed to the no-tail coons, I had three tails in my traps one summer by the chicken coop.

Ohoh thats cool. I heard they are pretty tasty too. So anyone around Marysville who has any cottontail rabbits and/or raccoons damaging your property shoot me a PM and maybe I can come shoot some of the critters for ya.
