Knight Bighorn or CVA Elkhorn
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:48:42 PM »

After reading all the praise that Elkhorn owners give this gun, I had pretty much decided to buy it. But now the Bighorn is back and this presents a dilemma for me.

Bighorn Pros:   Quality workmanship, customer loyalty, stainless steel barrel, never misfires?
Bighorn Cons:   Expensive, 2 weeks ago it was 399 pre-order now it is 419 I better decide quick; Is it still American made and the same high quality workmanship?

Elkhorn Pros:    Extremely accurate;  cheaper, I found one for 249 on sale  today and since I need two guns that is a big saving; Nicer action?
Elkhorn Cons:   Doesn’t have SS barrel, how important is that? ; Some claim that the firing pin is too thin which causes many misfires. I would like some feedback on this as this would surely be a deal breaker;   Not American made but then what is?

I am really torn on this, I don’t  mind paying more for quality but it doesn’t seem as though the Elkhorn is lacking on quality unless there is a problem with misfires. By the way, one is for me and the other for my son and I would like them to be the same model.

i have talked to knight gun smiths directly, yes the guns are made in the USA, still made with green mountain barrels which are some of if not not the best quality barrels on the market, just best they are that much on-line doesn't mean they wont be cheaper in stores, manufacture price is always more money, i have both stainless and blued, and yes it does make a difference, the blued guns rust so must easier than stainless. i am in no means bashing the elkhorn, i think its a great gun, but i do think the knight is some of the finest on the market.

I would lean towards the Knight personally. Made in America, Top Quality Barrel also has bore coating to help with fowling. Knight customer service is awesome. I believe they also retain a timmney trigger top quality throughout.

Not bashing the Elkhorn either great gun.
Smoke em when ya see em!

Hey BT I will let you in on a little secret, the newer muzzleloaders (last 50 years) don't have a 5 second ignition delay which means you could finally move up to branchantleredhunter!
