Off season Hobie..not sheds!
« on: March 27, 2011, 03:53:30 PM »
For many years now I have enjoyed an activity that until lately is little know and little appreciated by the masses of outdoorsman. An activity that the whole family can enjoy and look forward to doing on a yearly basis. The season is almost upon us and the family is just now starting to come alive with anticipation. I speak of course of the annual gathering of discarded fish swim bladders. Every year we prep the truck with a fresh tune up and new tires, grease and oil change, load the bed with 5 gallon buckets and head out to our favorite...sorry, not a chance of me telling you where...spot.

The problem now is that the "sport" is becoming so popular that many of my secrete locations are getting over run by new comers leaving me and the kids scrambling to find even an older dried up bladder. I fear the competition for bladders and the overcrowding of good locations may lead to shameful behavior by many. Only last year I personally saw a bladder hunter actually catching fish just to fill his morbid curiosity about what a fresh bladder might smell like. Most of us old timers feel only a bladder that has "spent some time in the sun" is worth the effort one must go through to restore the bladder to its natural appearance and hang it on the wall.

Some might ask the question as to what enjoyment, what thrill, what pleasure can come from finding some other anglers discarded fish guts, or the guts of some poor fish that didn't make it through the winter, and persevering them as if their own. Well, to you guys, I just say ha, don't knock it until you try it! Also, and I might add here I think this is a despicable reason to bladder hunt, you can turn a handsome profit from the sale of the bladders to various third world countries were they are used in a dried and ground up condition for things we don't even want to know about! Or even worse, selling the mounted bladders to unscrupulous fisherman that hang them on their own walls solely for bragging rights!

I call out to my friends here on the forum, contact the DWR, call your state representatives, call your moms, call somebody, we need to get this problem under control now before it's too late.
Many thanks, BP

HA! Great read! And to think I was upset with the competition out shed hunting...I can't even imagine the rush for those bladders!

I shoot in the off season. I don't like the smell of fish guts. I'll pass.   :chuckle:
