Thank god, at least i got one!
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:36:58 AM »
Well i did the ultimate jinx and pre-bought both turkey tags. Yeah, i was getting cocky.  Anyway opener came and went with just close calls.  Went back over sunday night for some redemtion.  drove through the night and pulled into our hunting spot at 4am.  We called about 500 yards from the truck and there was three roosted back where i parked :o So we do a big circle and get set up twice.  We end up thinking the bird was much further down after we set up, but now its too late to move.  At about 4:50 old tommy, the original bird,  decided to start gobbling again.  That was the one we were after and he was 80 yards in front of us.  Like always the roost is a crap shoot.  Well, we rolled a seven!  He flew straight down, walked across the road, which is when i thought my buddy would shoot, but didnt. He never saw the beard dragging!  Then the bird got to the side of us at 25 yards, gobbling his head off, again i thought my buddy would shoot(Stupid state of washington, there is always a hill or ridge in the way to ruin the show).  At this point I think he is just going to wait for the other hens to come down.  Next thing i know i hear a bird putting and purring 20 yards directly behind me.  I turn and see the bird and think, TOM, but its acting and sounding like a hen. I had never heard a tom purr.  Well just as im waiting to shoot, he struts, shows me his beard and i let my gun roar.  Well i missed! He flew off and my recently developed duck hunting skills saved the day.  Smoked him at about 30 yards, flying out of there!!!  THEN.... all the other turkeys decided to fly out of the tree.  TOM down at 5:10 am!!  Just when all my friends were convinced you cant get them off the roost, WRONG! thats twice now. Thought the weekend would turn out epic, I knew there were lots more birds in the area. Hell, at least three gobbled when i shot.   Turned out it would be epicly awful.  The woods shut up for the next 2 and a half days, besides the roost, and we hunted hard.  We would see birds, lots, but nothing gobbling.  I had dreams of those 10oclock to 2oclock birds running in. EHHHHH!  Oh well it is always the best thing in the world to be out there. Still cant figure out how to post a pic on this damn site :dunno:

The first pic is the 40 foot trail of feathers that happens when you blast a flying turkey( 2nd year in a row :IBCOOL:) They actuall go lower than the picture shows, but this is where i brought him up to because its where i found his nine inch beard that also got blasted off.

congrats.....

By the way, after you spend all the money to go hunting, it would be foolish to only have one tag. You can't imagine how many guys wish they would have had two tags when a double presents itself.  :twocents:

For me it's not "cocky" at all. It's superstition. This is only my fourth season hunting turkeys and every year I've taken one less bird than I've had tags:

Year one - two tags, one tom
Year two - one tag, no birds
Year three - two tags one jake

So this year? That's right! Three tags.  :chuckle: We'll just hafta see how that works out. So far I've seen no birds with only 13 days left in the season and I've been out every week. But, ya never know...still some time left...

The problem with that bearpaw is im not sure im willing to end my season with a double.  Opening weekend probably not, late in the year probably would take that shot.  Now ask me that next april 15th, i might be singing a different tune :o
