When did this come about? Game Department wants me to collect organ samples
They want
1: The Udder and if it was dry, clear fluid or had milk
2: Heart
3: 2 kidneys (w/fat)
4: 2 Middle Front Teeth

WTF? Never heard of this before

ive seen collection bins by the shell station in toutle and one by the main gate to the st helens tree farm off headquaters road. it says on the sign there they are sending samples to some university in alberta to find out more about what they eat and so on. basically the health of cow elk the sign said.

My grandfather and cousin both got cow tags that they had to do this for. it is so they can see how the animals are doing health wise, otherwise the gammies go out in june and harvest a few so they can run the tests, this just eliminaltes the need for them to go take any more cows out. Thats what they were told.

Theres a collection bin and sign with info on the chain link fence around the water tower just before you drop into Toledo on 505. I took a pic a couple weeks ago to post but never got around to it.

This has been going on in different areas for years. Seems like they would already have this data...IMHO

Never heard of it either. Few years ago we had a warden and a biologist come into camp and the biologist took samples himself same reasons as above. I wouldn`t mind doing it if it`s going to help the herd and I see some reports.

Thats what they told me too.  I got all the stuff in the mail yesterday for my 520 anterless permit.

I had to do this for my Colockum cow tag a while back. Luckily There was a WDFW biologist nearby when I shot mine and he collected the samples for me. Worked out pretty good. It all depends on what herd they are studying that year. It is actually pretty common with deer as well.

I got the kit with my Toutle muzzy cow tag.  Just something extra to go with the tag soup.  Darn caps wouldn't go off.
The directions were very clear about what organs they wanted and to make sure to keep all of the surrounding fatty tissue attached.  The fatty tissue is where toxins are stored, I assumed they wanted to see what effects all of the chemicals the tree farm is spraying on the trees and vegetation have on the elk.  I am sure it is great for the trees but not necessarily for the deer and elk.

And what's with the 1 bag??? Elk organs are huge. I'm not huntin rabbits.

dont have time to read all the posts but it sounds like they are trying to determine the heath of the heard, never know ya might found out some good info

I got a kit a couple years ago with my Montana tag. Seems like it was for "brucilosis" (sp?) or something like that. I'm wondering if it's the same thing here?
