2 stroke oil ratio for trolling?
«
on:

How much oil do most folks use in their 2 stroke trolling motors? Specifically a 2004 Mercury 8hp. I have heard run 50/1...run 100/1 if only trolling, etc. What are river fishermen using? Thanks!!

C-Money,, I have just ran the 50-1 mixture for the last 30 years without any problems. Before that we ran the same on our trolling motors when we were commercial fishing. Never a problem.

I always used 50-1 when I had a 2 stroke. Isn't there a label inside the cowling or somewhere on the motor that states what the mix should be?

First, you should run at least what is recommended by the manufacturer. I have not run the 2004 Merc but would say 50:1 is likely. While trolling I know the richer blends smoke a bit more but would not lean it out personally. I know a lot of new motors have variable oilers that lean out as you go faster so you are running ~50:1 at idle but it might lean out to as high as ~250:1 at high speed. So with that thinking I would run max oil mix at low speeds.

The dealer put this 100/1 crap in my head. I too have always ran 50/1 in past 2 strokes. I will stick to 50/1! Gonna fish with the motor Thursday for the first time. Thanks all, C

same as others, 50:1 but after the motor is good and broke in i leaned it back a little more, it kept me from fouling plugs when lugging her down, of course you always want extra plugs with you but after leaning her down a bit she became even more responsive, i do the same thing with my saws and power tools that are two strokes

I wonder if 60 or 70/1 would be safe? Its just gonna troll unless the 50hp has an issue. Merc dealer was pretty serious when I though he was joking about the 100/1 mixture....

Just use the Amsoil 100:1 pre mix. I run it in all my 2 stroke stuff at 100:1 and it works great, never had an issue.

the only way i'd run 50:1 in a dedicated kicker is if it's under warranty. i run 100:1 in mine, helps keep it from loading up. i pulled the head off this year and the bores are nice and bright.
actually, i think mine actually calls for 100:1 mix. i know the old johnsons/evinrudes called for 100:1, but it was changed to 50:1 mainly due to the bores getting rusty when sitting for long periods of time.

I run 100:1 in my 8hp Evinrude. Its a '91 and has about a million hours at trolling speed. A new impeller every few years is all the repair its ever needed.
