Oregons Keating Unit
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:14:58 PM »
Drew the late October rifle bull tag for Keating. Just got back from a four day scouting trip. From conversations with a biologist and some locals we found three or four decent places to keep in mind. The elk currently seem to be spread out fairly well with no certain area we checked out being the shining star. We're planning on another visit in September. Has anyone here have anything to toss my way with regards to any information that might help us better plan our hunt? Any tidbit could prove helpful.
Can't we all just get along?

Hunt as high as you can. I would look at going into the Summit point trailhead to scout around. The steep country above Cornucopia towards Cornucopia peak had alot of  fresh elk sign in their when we rode through there rifle deer hunting last year. Saw a good 300" bull in 2010 with cows while deer hunting with my dad in Sunshine basin. Didn't find much for elk when we were rifle deer hunting in the lower country road system in 2010. (I'm always looking for elk when I'm supposed to be hunting other things) I would hunt high and pray for snow.

The elk we saw were all over 5000 ft elevation. We did some snooping up on Summit Point. The east facing draws catching our attention. Might be a decent place to find a bull after he tires of rutting. The trouble I see with snow is traveling about as most of the elky areas appear to be higher up. But even the creek drainages are around 3500 ft. Thanks for the help. Everyone we speak with comments on the nice bulls in this unit. The hard part is going to be finding them

When you get snow it will push them down into the road system.
