Ground Blind or Tree Stand for Eastern Washington Deer?
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:50:16 PM »
I have both, but wanted to see what ya'll have to say.  This will be my 3rd season, and I shot my deer road hunting last year, so I haven't really had the chance to use either set-up yet.  I have a steel climber currently, but thinking about going to a River's Edge Pack n' Stack ladder tree stand.  Thoughts?  :dunno:

I have a fixed stand, I love hunting from a stand. You have a decent vantage point compared to ground blinds, I've had less problems being up in a tree with Mosquitos. My vote would be tree stand

Totally depends on location.

Best thing is keep road hunting! At least you have heat and AC...  :chuckle:

On a serious note I greatly favor treestands but there are areas or spots where a groundblind is the only option... good to have both in the arsenal... I avoid ladder stands like the plague! Hang ok and ladder sticks. I've never used a climber...

Totally depends on location.

:yeah:  If you are bowhunting, in many situations the treestands will be more effective. Rifle hunting does not seem to make as much difference

As a blackpowder hunter going for whitetailed deer in SE WA, I have had good success with tree stands (self-climber models).  I try to find topographic funnels leading up from ponderosa pine-covered hillsides to the farm fields where deer feed at night, and put my stands there.  A few times, though, I have seen lots of deer when holed up in the shadows of a hawthorn (on the ground), but then you have to be more careful with wind direction, and you don't have the same field of view.  In my opinion, treestands are very effective for whitetails and blacktails (mule deer not so much)- but again- it all depends on your local situation.

Cheers to all- September can't get here fast enough!
