Hanger for Antelope/Deer

So, I've seen a few people with these in the past, and I'm looking for one myself, either to borrow, steal or purchase. It connects into a pickup via the hitch and you use it to hoist the animal up so you can gut/skin it out and bone it out quickly in the heat of early fall.

I've seen a few on this website, anyone got any details?

I agree with building your own.  Spec it out to whatever details/features you want.

I have a welder, and the talent to build anything I want, but sometimes I can buy something ready made cheaper than I could buy the materials to build it!

Sounds like you should buy a ready made then.  As for me, I like the fact of relying on one build stout enough for adding an extension and hoisting an elk with no worries of failure.

Here is the one I built last year. Made it a bit beefy! Its got thickwall steel as the main frame and boat rollers to guide the straps.

Do you have a support for your lower 90 or do you have cables/rope to anchor the midpoint to the back of your truck/truckbox?

I am going to weld a 45 on the back this year. Then it should be able to pick up about anything It picks up deer without a problem and is pretty strong being thick wall. I Would not want to pick up anything over about 250 with it right now. It might bend, but for the light speed goats and deer it is ok.

Attaching an anchor point mid way up and attaching light gauge cables with turnbuckles to the inside of the bed really beefs it up as well.  Works especially good for a breakdown model.  Just a thought.

 Yeah I had thought about that as well. Since the tailgate will get in the way of my 45 It would really be like a 30 instead of a 45

Sorry if I gave the impression that I'm in the market for such a thing--I'm not.  However, if I was, I think I would weld an old-style bumper jack onto the vertical piece to put the majority of the weight on the ground, and less on the receiver hitch/truck.  That's a lot of weight to be hanging so far behind the rear axle.

How would you reccomend taking the meat home? DId you buy doe tags too? I am going to Wy and am trying to figure out how to get meat home, and trouble shoot the trip

we brought a freezer with us and filled it full of antelope, as soon as we shot an animal, gut and skin it so it can cool, when you get back to the hotel, bone and pack it in the freezer. Our animals were great tasting. Yes, we got alot of does too.

I used large coolers with dry ice. It worked pretty good, but dry ice is also expensive. I bought 2.5 gallon and 5 gallon ziplock bags that worked really nice.

I also like the idea of a portable freezer. You can wire one to hook up to a cigarette lighter, electrical outlet, battery, etc. Make sure it is small enough to be able to maneuver it into a hotel if you are going with that option. Look at putting a lock on it.

Our group shot lots of does as well. There is actually quite a bit of meat on antelope and I think the taste is fantastic. If you got some questions or need some ideas for gear needed, you can PM me.

I ended up buying the Foreverlast Tripod Game Hoist.  http://www.foreverlastonline.com/Game-Hanger-Portable-Tripod_p_16.html I wanted more portability and the option to set it up anywhere, particularly under a tarp, overhang or backyard.

If you have the money for a YETI cooler, that might be another option.

by freezer Im talking a small 5' chest freezer like you would put in your garage, we wired my 12' cargo trailer for a plug in and the hotel let us plug the freezer in there the whole week we were there. Worked out pretty good.
