Is a Montana cow elk decoy really worth it?
« on: July 10, 2012, 11:06:22 AM »
There is a side profile and rump profile of a cow elk made by Montana decoys.  What is your personal experience with these silhouettes?

Should be really good if you are trying to attract Wolves!  :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

I have never had any luck with them in my tree stand, but always wondered if it would allow you to walk up on elk close enough to get a shot ( by using them as a sheild)??
“In common with”..... not so much!!

You'll get no argument from me--I'm a sucker for camo, calls, and decoys.  They work, but not always for what you are looking to lure in....  :chuckle:

If i spent the 100 bucks or whatever they cost now and it worked one time I'd consider it money well spent.

Check out these while you're at it.  I had the Montana Decoy but it was not good for packing around - Rigid Plastic and big - ended up not using it.  These are photo fabric with metal hoops.  Never seen one in person though...

Not sure what you're talking about, but your link takes you to the Montana decoy section. They're made of fabric with spring steel. No plastic in 'em.

I bought one 4 or 5 years ago and have deployed it when possible ( about 20 % of the time when calling )  and I have yet to have it make a difference as far as a bull seeing it and coming in closer.  I have had cows, deer etc see it & be close to it and was relieved it did not scare them.  I still carry it as the one time it does work & keeps him coming , I will think it is the greatest. My problem has been getting it out fast & in the right place. Mike

He probably means so you dont get some crazy city slicker blasting at you and your decoy.  That's my guess anyway.

I wouldn't use them around other hunters or during a rifle season unless you wanna get shot. . I used some homemade one in Idaho and snuck in on a bull in the wide open wearing one that looked like a ass patch . Setting one up well behind you to get the focas off your location would be your best bet .

I would use it for archery season for my bull tag and have it as an attention getter to take the focus off myself in the set up.
