The archery hunt doesn't have very good success as far as I have researched.  I could imagine after spending some time out there that that would be hard.

Ive both hunted the desert and have seen guys bow hunt it.  Im not a stick-n-stringer but there are a couple of options for hunting out there.  most of the deer are in the open sage that time of year and the guy I watched hunted them in the open sage.  It is not for a lack of targets as you see bucks non-stop it is just a matter of closing the distance.  There are areas of trees around the ponds/wasteways/and reservoir.  If somebody was a tree stand hunter or blind hunter that would probably be an option too.  But that open sage is such a target rich environment its hard to pass up the thrill of the chase.

A guy at work drew the A rag.  He had max points.  He's pretty stoked about it.

M_ray and I archery hunted it when the season was in late September. It was tough, tough building tree stands in the Russian Olives too. We both had good opportunities though, but didn't connect. There is a lot of public access.

There's no deer in the Desert unit....

People need to stop putting in for this unit.  It's not worth it.  Please stop putting in for this tag.  There's no deer around Moses Lake.  Only good duck/goose hunting. ;) oh and bass fishing.

tmike- how long ago was it that it was just an open unit? What was the quality like then? Just curious if the limited entry has helped much. I have only been in the basin for about 5 years and I was just curious.

I think maybe 10 years?  I use to hunt ducks/geese in that area and have been all over the unit for various reasons and I never even thought about deer hunting it.  I saw an occasional large buck but no bombers.

Why is "Desert A" the largest demand area for washington hunters for modern firearm permits? i thought there was a bunch of big mule deer there? is that wrong?

if this isnt a good place to put points towards then what Special hunt permit should i put in for?

I drew a archery tag a couple of years back.  It started after the rifle hunters and was very hard to get within shooting distance.  I saw a lot of deer and a few good buck but no monsters.  In 10 days of hunting I missed a buck I wanted and went home empty. :bash:
