Bear hunting elevation for the opener

  I know down low the berries are ripening and the bears are feeding, but what about the 3to 4000' level?

Ive been seeing the majority of the quality bears around 2700-3500 ft if that helps

ill be hunting right around 4500 ft opening day and ive seen a couple diffrent bears up there in the last couple weeks

I dont worry to much about elevation.   I just hunt the spots that have produced bears over the years.

how do you guys know if its a boar or sow?  Ive shot a few bears but never really knew if it was a boar or sow before i shot.  Its always there's a bear bang dead bear.  Ive never been able to tell the difference.   Maybe i just need to watch more closely.

If it stands to pee its a boar, and if it squats its a sow....

the only reason i confident he was a boar was because he was obviously a mature bear and his attributes pointed toward boar, he had a very large round head/face, ears appeared almost non-existent, he was very blocky and his belly was near the ground. i got to watch him feeding for about 5 minutes at 50 yards so i got a pretty good look at him. sows tend to be a little more streamlined although thats not the rule... i have a hard time distinguishing sex of younger bears. i guess the more bears you observe the easier it becomes  ive had pretty good luck picking out boars from sows while hunting.

If you find a good food source and some bear sign odds are there's more than 1 in the area.  I wouldn't put to much thought into elevation.
