muzzleloader ideas
« on: July 02, 2012, 11:29:36 PM »
Hello, Again I need help from people who hunt. Now thinking about a Knight Bighorn or a Disc Extreme 50 cal. Have handled a Bighorn but felt to heavy in the barrel. Does the Extreme handle any different? Any thoughts ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i like Knight bighorn but i dont like its weight. Carried one for a season that i borrowed from a friend. I would have the barrel fluted or chop 2 inches off the end to lighten it up.

Although I have not handled the disc extreme I do know it's 7lbs 6oz where the bighorn is 7lbs 3 oz. I have the bighorn thumb-hole with a sling & it's never been a problem for me, maybe I'm just used to it  :dunno:.

You can try and find an older knight wolverine. It's basically a bighorn with a short barrel. I bought my dad one last year and am thinking about trading in my bighorn and finding another wolverine. They shoot great and are a lot easier to pack.

Yup.  I bought a Wolverine for our family loaner gun.  It's much nicer to carry than the Bighorns, but I suspect that the muzzle velocity suffers a bit.  Also, I've become rather fond of the front-heavy Bighorns for shooting--much steadier than any of my other guns.  They are, however, a pain on the sling for long hikes.

First off - I want you to now I am totally biased on these points... If had a choice for a legal ML in the Pacific Northwest it would be a Knight, unless or if White were still making ML's then it might be a toss up.

Second if'n I had a choice between a pull-cock open breech Big Horn or closed bolt with Western Kit in a Knight DISC- the DISC would win hands down...

but remember - I am biased - but I must confess i have both Knights and really do like both of them.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Go with the Disc Extreme,  I have a Vortex, disc, and wolverine.  The disc is the easy to slap a cap in.  The Wolverine is a little lighter but  for the 7 days of hunting I do with it each year I do not notice the weight.

If you need to do a few soup can curls to get your arms ready for hunting season so you can carry your rifle Send me a PM and I can tell you how to do that!!      My advice is by the disc extreme first, then you will NOT have a extra 2 guns in your safe that you never shoot.

The barrel weight is actually your friend.  It makes aiming much more steady.
And I think God must be a cowboy at heart
He made wide open spaces from the start
He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again
