how much weight is on your crab pot?

My pots are naturally around 40 lbs so I don't use any weight.

I have 8 pound barbells in mine.  Not because it is right, but because it is what I had.  Seems to have served me just fine so far.

The stronger the current the more weight you will need, I've had pots dragged down a shoreline with 10lbs in them. I generally try and crab in protected areas where I won't need weight.

That is because you are crabbing where there is no current! I recently recovered a pot I lost at Point-no-point 6 days later off the west side of San Juan...Ripper and Rippette were present as witnesses too!

That pot had about 2lbs of iron in it.

I had another pot recovered 2 days earlier (lost on the same day at same place) up north of Port Angeles by a US customs agent of all people!

If you are crabbing in sheltered areas that should be fine, if your pot gets a lot of exposure to strong current you will likely lose it!

Nah FC.... Plenry of current off hat. My pots have some weight to em and I keep them well baited. Maybe a little luck as well.

That area is relatively  well protected? Unless you are using rebar framed pots you will lose them in hard current and sometimes even then!

I put 6-8 pounds in my cheapie little pots.  They stay put.

Depends on depth as well, the more line out in the current, the more weight you need.  I don't use any but I put mine out in a non-currented bay.

I've got about 25 lbs in my Crab/Shrimp pots but the best thing I,ve done is tie about 8' of rope to bottom of pot with a home made rebar anchor on the end. My pots simple do not move anymore.

25-35 pounds worth of old cast iron window weights in each one of my pots.  I don't have to worry about them being swept away.

I put about 8-10lbs of weight in mine plus I add a buoy with about 25 - 30 feet of trailing sinking line. That way if the first one gets pulled under by the current (Hood Canal) the trailer stays up.
