Anyone hunt the Baker-Snoqulmie NF?
« on: August 10, 2012, 11:50:25 AM »
More specifically, around the 70 series roads off of hwy 410? I've never hunted bear before or been up in that area so I'm at quite the disadvantage. I'm mainly looking for a nice area without many people where I can pitch a tent and enjoy my time in nature even if I can't make a kill.

It's better for bear than deer/elk IMHO.  However, you will run into lots of people as FS 70 is a popular area. But as always there are places to find solitude if you blaze your own path. Good luck.

I'm using Google maps satellite and topo views to try and find roads that dead end in areas that have streams running. Figure I can handrail up those for a bit and should be able to not have anyone else around.

Google maps gives me coordinates of 47.137074, -121.475759, a smallish valley with a stream running through it and a couple of feeders along with adequate cover. I don't think there's any trails in the area so hopefully there won't be too many people. Any input?

Edit: I wish everything was in MGRS, would make my life a lot easier.

What's a better choice of firearm - my heavier 8x57 with a 4-16x44 and 180gr Nosler reloads or my lighter/handier 7.65x53, open peep sights and 150gr Hornady factory loads? Not sure what ranges are normally seen around here.

That area (routes branching from 70) was a bust. Drove out there today to scout around and didn't really find anything promising. Didn't seem to be any berries and didn't find any bear sign. Drove/walked the woods all over and all I found were some nice camping spots and one pile of elk droppings and hoof prints.

I'm trying to find something, I'm just so limited on time to scout and hunt.
