Spike Elk bowhunting in Wenaha, Dayton or Tucannon units?
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:20:40 PM »
Two of us are thinking of backpacking into one of these three units for the general bowhunting season.  We've not previously hunted in any of the three.  Assuming we get some guidance on access points, and get back at least three or four miles from the nearest road, what are our realistic chances of getting into animals, specifically spikes?  Would this just be a backpacking trip for us, or a genuine encounter filled hunt?  Anyone familiar with the Wenaha Tucannon Wilderness Area?  Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Not knowing the area as you say, your chances would be slim to just run into spikes.
I hunt most of these areas and have for years, I have killed 1 spike and I hunt pretty hard.
2-4 miles in in a day hunt isnt unreal.Where I really like to hunt is 2 miles before it even opens up to start seeing anything.
I am not saying there not there, its just not an easy hunt.

Good luck on your hunt . Its hard , steep and deep. It will be a hunt to remember. Maybe contact mtcook on here to pack you in a few miles.would be worth it in my opinion. besides being a good guy he knows his stuff. Might share his knowledge with you when he drops you off.
If you want to go at it solo and never been there, this will be your scouting year so next year you might be more prepared.
If its brown knock it down
