Scouting trip yielded great results - Taneum and Manastash
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:23:26 PM »
I'll post a couple of pics when I get to my lap top, but I was very impressed with the first results than the second. Went into GMU 336 and was able to locate a few Elk. I also noticed a ton of torn up stumps, that is why I purchased my bear tag last week!
Second location was in GMU 340, not exactly what I was hoping for. I haven't been in the area for a few years and the results were not what I was hoping for. It did yield in a couple of Does, 1 Cow Elk, 1 Mountain Goat and 1 torn up tree from a bear!  I went in and all around the are looking for Elk and I am just a little discourage at my finding. Noticed a lot of sign but nothing fresh what so ever!
I may need a little help with the early season and a little rain might help out as well, Any suggestions?

Where did you go up in 340?
I've been up this year a couple weeks ago and there were elk everywhere.

I went up Manastash road to Buck Meadows looked all around in the trees and drainages, backed out and went up Taneum Road down through 3330 to Gnat Flats and went all through the trees and drainages as well. The only ell that I saw was on the way out down low.

I was wondering about that tree! I'm not sold on that being a bear as I saw no other sign of bear on the ground or around the area.  In the first unit I was in I know it was bear tearing up the stumps.

I found an area like that no sign just some seriously ripped up stumps.....while sitting and glassing a hillside a hunk of stump flew by me and then I saw the stump destroyer....woodpecker  :chuckle: :chuckle: I had no idea they could do so much damage

that tree definitly resembles the work of a wood pecker. I have watched them do some of that amazing work as i sit quietly under the tree next to the one being worked over.

I was able to drive all the way up to Buck Meadows, gate was open and just beyond Buck Meadows it was blocked.

So the road must be fixed.

We went in thru Taneum and all the way up to Quartz.

If this fire jumps I90... this thread will be meaningless.... that whole area (in the words of cheech and chong) will "go up in smoke"   :bdid: :bash:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
