Disappointed......wolves???
« on: August 20, 2012, 01:01:29 PM »
I went back into the deep country looking for big bucks, where I normally see 100 deer a day, 20-30 bucks, I saw 4 deer total in three  days and one two point.    Two piles of older wolf crap.   I wonder if its started.....or wonder if there could be other factors such as a greener midrange???  I saw more deer in the outskirts of Leavenworth at the bottom of Blewitt than I did the whole time I was back there.   I usually pass through a fawning area with lots of critters.  Not one deer bed, almost zero sign.   NOT impressed.

That is not good news.  You would think that the bigger bucks would be up there if there was decent feed.  I fear wolves and a pretty strong winter.

I don't think some of the bucks are making it to traditional summer ranges this year or last but seems like something else is going on in that country for sure

Well no deer/elk the wolves will probably move on.
Then again they might find backpackers are easy pickings.

Nothing more exciting than hearing wolves howling when hiking back to base camp in the dark and only 6 arrows in the quiver.   :yike:  been there hiked faster

I saw very few bucks in the high country. I used to see 50 deer a day, including 20 bucks. Out of 4 days up scouting this year, I've only seen 5 deer in the high country. Most of the deer I've seen have been down near the towns as well...

Seen a bunch around winthrop (in town), nothing up on the hills, but it was super hot and mid day when I was driving around.

I can't wait until the wolves follow the deer and elk down to town and start hunting them in people's yards!! That should knock the blinders off a lot of the idiots and the less informed! :yike:

Bone I have had a lot of whitetail at the cabin the last few years then this last winter we had a cougar down there (think it was the 1 they caught living in town) this summer I have only 2 WT's. During the winter the WT's live in the river bottom while the muley's live up on the hill and I think the cat wiped out the WT's. I have been seeing really nice buck's in an area we use to hunt all the time but stopped 3 years ago they really seem to have come back this year. Maybe the same reason your not seeing anything where you were at? Whatever that might be! All I know is when a pack moves in north of Winthrop from Goat creek to Boulder creek to freeze out pass will get wiped out.

Personally I don't think the wolves have eaten the deer...but simply pushed them out...I hunt an area pretty close to the Methow and we always see a lot of bucks (mostly all mature given the elevation) but a few years ago we came face to face with a wolf-just before the look out pack was "confirmed" and for the next 3 years we had a serious "dry spell" and saw very few deer total...then all of a sudden last year, no wolf sign and I saw  legal bucks on opening day...didn't have to go out on day 2 as I filled my tag on the opener...point being is that the deer have returned to this part of their range, as the wolves have moved out...don't worry Bone...it sounds like the look out pack isn't doing so well, and maybe they will move along again (back to Canada!)

Doug, I saw this same thing happen in a few of my favorite Mtn. Mulie spots back home in Montana.  Wolves came in a wiped them out pretty bad.  Between the black bears, grizzly bears and Lions the area had, the wolves were just the tipping point.  Area's where you could drive roads and see 30-70 does and a couple fair bucks from the road, your now lucky to even see a Mule deer.  Sorry to hear about your spot.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.
