Food storage for bears?
« on: August 23, 2012, 09:34:57 PM »
I have a question for you backcountry folk...do you store your food in a tree 100 yards or so from camp like what is recommended for bear? Seems like a pain to me.

I dont, most of my food is freeze dried which is in sealed plastic containers...I dont cook in the tent....etc...try to take some bear precautions....just wasnt sure if any of the other, more experienced people did.

I suppose I should, so it doesnt bite me in the arse..literally.... :chuckle:

By the time I hike into my area (shortest trip for me is 3 miles...longest is 7 miles to camp) I am sweating pretty good and my stuff doesn't smell so "Irish Spring clean". Human scent will keep almost all wild animals away, especially bears, with the exception of a trained bear, like those that get fed by raiding camp site dumpsters in state parks and such...so up in the high country it's not too much of a problem. If you are really worried, just hang the pair of socks you wore in outside your tent...no bears!

I usually put mine up as high as my reach mostly just to keep it away from any small critters that would like to chew through the bag and have a late night snack.  I have seen mice chew through backpacks to get to food.

Ive always tied up food that wasnt in a sealed container. The one time i didnt i got raided by a raccoon in the middle of the night.
Things that are sealed like mres i wouldnt worry about though.
