Bull Down!
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:40:11 PM »
It has been a busy year and havent gotten into the field as much as I would have liked. With the weather forcast it didnt look like good elk weather but we were very pleasantly surprised by a few bugles and some good activity in the areas we hunted.   Jenna and I headed up a game trail to look around on the top of a ridge when we came upon some fresh elk sign. We snuck our way up towards the timber when we jumped a cow.  I cow called and a bull ripped a bugle from the timber down at us.  He seemed about 50 yards away but we couldnt see through the brush. I made a couple cow calls and got ready! The bull made his way right to us and came close....too close!  He stopped at 7 yards the first time and then went around a bush and stuck his head out in the trail at 10 yards.  I could hear the repeated clicking of the range finder as jenna was updating me the range.   I went to full draw and had no shot. I looked down and saw a place to put my feet to get a better angle all the while the bull is staring at a cow that had walked up the trail.   We had the wind perfect so that wasnt an issue! I made a move all at once with a quick step to my right!  I did that and took a shot and my arrow deflected and shot into the bushed to the right of the bull!   He wheeled and down the hill he went.
With all the noise and stuff going on a bull bugles down below us and we hurried down to see if we could see him.  I rounded a corner on the trail and right in a little meadow was the bull with about 15 cows. Jenna ranged the bull at 52 yards right as he turned broadside. He was looking the other way and I released the arrow!  SMAAACCCKKKK! Perfect pass-through! The bull stumbled away and about 20 seconds later we heard him crash!    Bull down!!!! He is not the big bull I was after but a nice 5x6!   It was a hard packout with the heat but we made it!    Anyways here are a few pics....
