Getting ready to smack a bear this weekend!

Got the .338 all dailed out to 1500. Favorite go-to rifle for long range built by Travis Riddell. Now to go look for a bear now that the weather has cooled here in e. wa. This weekend, wish me luck!

Are you only practicing on steel/ rocks? Because I heard it right here that those of us that shoot steel don't know how to shoot at live flesh and blood.

Lots of difference between steel/paper and hair. I've personally have witnessed guys that can punch paper totally blow it on animals time and time again. Some even in this thread. Bears shot in the foot/paw, deers briskets split.

I'm working on it! Sent my John Deere 4300 to the doctor because of how much I've been working on it. Should have it back this week, maybe. Those three point hitches aren't so tough.

Love the comments. Lojack, never shot one over 200 yards before of the 24 I have brought home, so yeah, thought I'd try something a little different this time! B-hammer, just the opposite for me...kill lots of game but cant hit steel at 100 yards...LOL! JTP, maybe if Jr and I dont succed this weekend, we should plan a trip when your not so busyy? Maybe with your "steel and rock" ability and my lack pof, we can bring "Boo-Boo" home?? LOL! Seriously, sorry you'll miss this weekend to hunt.  And "Fuzzy" well, keep 'em coming! Love it buddy!

mountainman, that would be great. I'll have to shoe horn some time in at some point as I have 2-protégé's that I've promised to take hunting this season so I don't think I'll get any animals on the ground myself.

I would be very impressed seeing someone make a kill shot on a live animal at 1500 yards though. Whats the flight time of a .338 at that distance? Gotta be long enough for a bear to take an unexpected step or two...resulting in a foul shot. Too many risks involved in a shot that far for me to chance wounding an animal. But would love to see someone pull it off.

We are going to putt up the road and pop a few grouse while we look for an adult bear.  I think I will wait til it cools a bit more before I decide to get after the bear, but I wont pass on the right one either. SHot guns and hand cannons for now, got lots of time, can hunt every day.

Here is a  short video of Shawn Carlock showing the possibilities of taking the long shot on animals.
While not quite 1500, the basics are the same and with the proper training and equipment, 1500 is doable.

Time of flight in my Edge is right at 2 seconds at 3500' elevation.  As long as the animal is calm, the shot is good to go.  Shot a coyote in Montana at 1732yds and he stood still long enough for the bullet to get to him and roll him.  Multiple deer and elk over 1k as well.  If they are amped up, or rutting bucks chasing does, it becomes a little more challenging and one has to be a little more carefull.
