Getting Cape from Wilderness to Taxidermist
« on: September 01, 2012, 09:47:01 AM »
I'm headed to Prince of Wales island in November for a deer hunt. It'll be a pretty remote hunt with no way to get out of the wilderness until the end of the trip (about a week). If I'm lucky, I'd be interested in bringing back a buck's cape to do a shoulder mount potentially. Never had an animal mounted before and I'd be very interested in people's thoughts on the feasibility of this, and techniques for how to preserve things until I'm back in civilization.

I will have adequate facilities to keep things dry and cool, but frozen may be a stretch (though it should be pretty damn cold up there in November).

Ideally I'd like to use a WA taxidermist - is that a pipe dream (should I be looking for someone in Petersburg, for example)? Thanks for the help in advance.

Hey npaull,

It is completely realistic to bring your animal back and have it mounted by a WA Taxidermist.  Hunters do it all the time.

I'm going to need some more information such as.

Are you going on a guided hunt?  Are you going up there with a friend that lives up in AK?  Are you going up there alone?  Are you flying or driving?  Are you going to be camping on the island?  How long is your hunt going to be. . .7 days. . .2 weeks. . .Once you kill a deer your coming home, etc.  Are you going for 1 animal or multiple?

If it would be easier just give me a call (360) 704-0034.
