my first day bow hunting
« on: September 02, 2012, 09:53:23 AM »
so started my morning yesterday waiting on a whitetail ive been watching. he of course didnt show. made a hike in a different area and found a doe and a 2 point. hiking back to the truck i ran into a rattle snake, played with in a small bush till i killed. (had to kill something) 10 buttons. went home and took a break with the heat. went back out in the late afternoon and found a few muley does chase off a coyote and spotted 3 muley bucks off in the distance. once i got closer i discovered i was looking at a 2x3, 3x3, and very nice and wide 4x5. having the multi season and a rut permit im holding out for a big one and this is one i would never pass up.

so hears what ive learned on my first day of bow hunting.
1. rattle snakes are out
2. its hot
3. the bucks arent hiding like during rifle season
4. putting a 2.5 hour sneak on 3 muley bucks kills your back
5. belly crawling 300 yards in star thisel sucks!
6. muleys are hard to sneak on in the open
7. deadwind doesnt work when youve sweated a bunch
8. youre screwed when the wind flips on you..

what i still dont know is
1. how to close the last 60 yards on muleys in the wide open
2. how to stay quiet when going through dry star thisel

the result of my first day of bow hunting was i didnt take any shots, but i LOVE bow hunting!

Wish I had a camera! Buddy of mine saw it a couple weeks ago. I had no idea about the buck till I saw it yesterday. He tries saying it was 32 wide. But until a tape is on it I don't believe it. To me he was clearly 25-30 inches. My guess is 28 inches.

Sounds like a good first day in the woods with a stick and string. Nothing like being that close to the critters. Keep it up and good luck.

Here's some updates. I've been seeing legal bucks. All but 2 weren't big enough for me to shoot at. Of course the two I would have shot were close enough for a muzzle loader but not a bow. I've only had one great broadside shot and it was at 35 yards a nice 3x4 he latex out to probly 23-24 wide but was thin horned so I let him walk. Took my bro inlaw out and we saw 3 legal bucks in the distance. went back yesterday and saw a legal muley at a couple hundred yards. The wind was blowing right at him and he knew we were there before we even peaked over the hill. Thats pretty much it for now!
