First bull tag, Peaches Ridge modern
« on: September 06, 2012, 06:38:36 PM »
I am brand new to this forum so forgive me if I don't quite do it right.  I came across this forum as part of my scouting for my bull tag.  I have been hunting the Little Naches unit for the last 10 years or so with my relatives and this is the first bull tag that any of us has ever drawn and I want to make it a good one.  We have been hunting the 1906 road area most of the time and then some up on the Naches trail.  We have a few spikes and cows to show for it but haven't seen many big bulls.  I had the one that dreams are made of walk right in front of my son and I last year but it didn't match up with our tags.  I was hoping that someone might give me some pointers on areas to scout around Ravens Roost/Crow Basin or some other remote area.  I will probably be in the woods by myself.  My dad will be out from Iowa but has a heart condition and will stay near the roads.  the rest of my party won't show up until the opening of the spike season.  I have quite a bit of time to scout between now and then.  I am considering this a one time deal for me.  Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the site  :hello:

If your there a week before the season starts, you should have a good chance at a nice bull. Not many people up there thenand they bulls are still active and during the day (some what).
The 1906 should be a good bet for you then also.... There are elk all over those hills, so be ready for one to pop up where you dont expect them  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I know where some big bulls are in the unit but it is a little bit to late to be asking. I did see a 7x8 running around yesterday somewhere up in the woods. Not sharing any info. good luck.

Thanks you guys, I am beginning to like you already.  It is a couple of hours away for me but I think my best bet is to just spend some time up there.  I have kind of gotten into my own little rut of doing the same thing but have wanted to get out a little farther.  I have never even heard an elk in the wild bugle before but am hoping to get to see that this year.

Ill chime in a little here.

1. its late in the game to be asking for help
2. the day you got drawn you should of starting scouting
3. get up there now and look around
4. GET OFF THE ROADS
5. this is a vast area that holds many elk, others may say no or i didnt see any. Look around and HUNT, that is a great tag.  Wish i could help more but im busy with others that needed help.

C-POST?  I don't want you guys giving up all your secrets the first day.  I will try to figure that one out on my own for awhile.  Is it a tavern?

It's a stupid joke that's getting way to old on here.

Good luck on your hunt. Wish I could help you but I do not know that unit.

You will find that most people on here are not willing to help out a fellow hunter. Not all, but most. I don't know the area but if I did I would give you any info I had. Good luck on your hunt. I hope you are successful.

Maybe we can, or I will rephrase that quote! Most people are willing to give out information but would also like those to contribute to it as well! See its like hunting, the more you put into to it the more you'll get out of it and have a higher chance at harvesting animals. I don't see a problem giving information, but you have to figure that the hunt has already begun for some of us! IMHO, information will be given out if you can just read between the lines. Additional Hunting reports should start to trickling in over the next few weeks!

I am actually looking for something tough to get to just for the heck of it.  I never have gotten very far off the road and am looking for an adventure.  I want to be stuck with the problem of "now that I shot that monster clear back in this hole, now what am I going to do?" :)

I get that C-POST is an inside joke among members here, probably meant for all the people asking where to go to get a big bull.  It doesn't bother me, experience has its privileges and I am the new guy here.  But from what I have heard you can sit in your lawn chair and pick out the elk you want to shoot as they pass  by at C-POST. ;)

It's not once in awhile and it's on way to many threads. It's going to change very soon trust me on that one. Many people are tired of it. I have got messages from people telling me how old it is getting. Wanting to quit because of the crap and driving new members away. I have got messages on this very thread from people thanking me for saying it

I am not coming down on you for helping people. The fact that it turns way to many threads to crap and some new members leave because of bad info and the way they are treated.

You have a great tag and with the forest service closing little naches road so much there aren't nearly as many hunters or hunting pressure on the elk in there this year.  So while it hurts the archers, it should help the modern guys.   Good luck!

Welcome to the site Greenhorn. :hello:
I would recomend you head over to the introduction thread and post a little bit about yourself. As it was said on here earlier, some people around here don't like to give out information to "newbies". I see you are from Bickleton, myself and a few others are from Goldendale. Have a great hunting season!

As far as Peaches Ridge I have never seen or hunted that area. I would do a quick search of "Peaches Ridge" on the top right of the screen and see what topics come up.

Hey Greenhorn,

I just got back from that area and will head back tomorrow. Couple things I can tell you;
-the woods are crawling with hunters. This is only my 3rd year hunting elk so I don't have much to compare it to. But it seems bad. No idea how that will affect modern.
-it is very dry and noisy. The elk rest in thick blowdown most of the day and are tough to get on.
-bulls are bugling already and we have seen several very nice bulls with 20-30 cows with them just this week.
-While going high is probably what I would do if I had a bull tag, I have been surprised by the quality of bulls we see low and have seen every year for the past 3.  VERY close to where you are describing.

Good luck, the elk are there, hopefully you will find them when modern starts.
what in the wild wild world of sports???

Wow, you guys are amazing.  There is a lot of real estate up there.  I may have driven up quartz creek once, but I am unfamiliar with it.  Like I said earlier, I am kind of stuck in a rut doing the same thing near the river off of the 1906 which has worked out ok for spikes(3 in 10 years), but I am looking to go big this year and have an adventure.  Do you take the 1901 to get up in there and then start hoofing it from the top?

Many elk are killed close to the roads every year, so don't think you have to hike way out of the way to kill a quality bull.

Went up to the Little Naches this afternoon.  I was surprised by how many hunters were camped up there and planning on waiting out the road closure starting tomorrow.  No campfires were allowed and it was sure cool coming home 49Deg and low clouds.  I set up a trail cam where I normally hunt and then cruised the clearcuts on the 1914.  Only saw one cow eating her way through.  The 1913 was blocked with big rocks and a sign at the start on the bridge.  Several of the rocks had been moved and it looked like you could get a skinny jeep or small pickup through but probably not my long box, so I passed it up.  Looking forward to spending more time up there after the road closure.  It was also nice to be able to use 410 the whole way up and not have to take the Nile road detour.  I bet that the people living on the Nile road are thankful too!

Milk creek and all the other closed roads gives you opportunities to shoot nice bulls. I have personally seen more bulls off the 1913 than I do the 1914 while I am up there.  And just so you know, the number of archery hunters up there is nothing compared to modern firearm.  there have been camps up there since the first week of august.

Thanks Naches Sportsman, a friend and I drove around the 1913 today and only ended up seeing one cow all day, the pickup just fit between the guard rail and Ricks on the 1913 bridge.  Tried bugling a few times but didn't get any response.  There was snow on top of Ravens Roost this morning for a short time.  Gonna keep on looking!
