Hunting Hour

Been a while since I put in a lot of effort hunting black tail so just real quick. Do you guys tend to head in at dark and get set up (no tree stand mind you) or do you guys wait to head in till you can see better?

If I know the area or have a spot I like, then I prefer to get in there before light and be there as it gets light. If I don't know the area well or don't have a spot picked out then I tend to start my hunt just as it is getting light so I can see the whole way.

Wether I am hunting blacktail, whitetail or mules, I am in the spot I want to be at least an hour before daylight.  It gives the world a little time to settle down and you are less likely to blow critters into the next county.

PERFECT! That's what I was thinking, Ill head in with the trusty ol headlamp and have a nice sit for an hour. THANKS GUYS!

Another thing, I use either a green or blue light because they cannot be seen from very far away by humans and they tend not to spook game as much.  I have actually shined my green light directly into a does eyes from 15 feet and it did not spook her.

didn't even think about that. I think I have a green filter too!

depends on what your huntn, i mean timber wise, if your lookn over clearcuts then you dang sure dont want every deer in the world winding you before it gets light, is there a tone of people that hunt the same piece of dirt as you? if not slip in there after it light enough to see really well, if your after a huge buck you will want to be way in the timber on a travel route, big bucks head to bed well before light. if they are chasing does then all bets are off, they are where you blunder into them at that point. if your not picky then root around in big clearcuts that have good feed and cover all day, sit and glass and then move around. many times you will swear there are no deer in a cut, then when you root around in there deer pop out of the wood work.... good luck dude

I like to watch the sun come up from my stand.  Some times I even show up at stand two hours before shooting light.

Dark for sure. Love seeing  that first light and the animals walking when it gets lighter.
