Project Samurai Done!!!

Well for now still needs a few things. As some of you saw I bought this samurai a little bit ago and had some things to fix and get done. I took a ton of pictures during the upgrades but I don't want to post that many pics. I will do a list and run down of what I have done to it.

92 samurai 78k 4x4

1:First upgrade done was to fix the lock up's in the transfer case. After me and my buddy pulled it apart and got it cleaned. We installed a shifter washer to keep everying in line. Now it shifts like butter.

2: I had to fix the parking break wire to get the parking break light to turn off.

3: I coated the whole thing in a DIY bed liner project. This took over 30 hrs of work to do! I had to ruff the whole thing ip with a wire brush on my drill to get the bed liner to stick well. Then 3 coats of bed liner and a few more touch up paintings. I did everything outside but the front bumper "since I am going to be welding on it". I also did the inside floor boards and the back inside fenders and wheel wells.

I bought 2 kits to do this. Only needed one to do the whole thing! So I took one kit back. They are 100.00 I also found a 25.00 rebate on the kits. so it only cost me 75.00 and my time to do it. The kit I used was by duplicolor. If anyone wants to do a truck bed or anything, this is a great kit. I would be happy to help with info I learned as well.

4: I had to install new window regulators. The old ones did not work without vice grips. The only parts I am still waiting on is the handles.

5: New diamond plate door panels and tailgate panel. This really did a lot to help make it look sharp. The old cloth covers were crap and really made it look like crap.

6: new soft top. The old one had wholes and was faded and looked really junky.

7: New door check straps.

Plus a ton of other little things I don't need to list out like seat covers and tansfer case knob etc

Here is what I put into it and what it cost me to do the project.

The rig was for sale for 4k I picked it up for 2900.00 after some hard ball.

3343.00+ about 300 in tax and licensing brings me in at around 3643.00

Saving around 1300.00 with stuff on sale and working out a good price to start with on the rig.

Next it needed new tires. Since the day I bought it I have been hunting for a killer deal. I found it 2 days ago in the portland craigs list. The guy I got it from told me that brand new 32x11.5 rubbed pretty good, so he said to take it down to 31x10.5. Well I don't lisen very well! I found the perfect set to cut threw about anything! Almost new 33x9.50r15's mounted on plain steel wheels!!! I new they would clear well and going down to the 9.50 would save me from rubbing at all on the turns. Looked the tires up and new they are around 200 each without the wheels. With wheels probably 280 each x 4= 1120.00 new. These tires are in like new shape and have less then 5k on them. I got to the guys house and called him. He could not get away from work and said open this gate they are in the pile, dig threw and grab them. The he said call me if you want them and I will tell you where to put the money. "crazy to find someone so trusting, very nice guy" So after digging threw this pile for about 30 mintues I got them out. Why digging. I also found a set of 30x9.50xr15's. Brand new mounted on steal wheels. Still have the glue from the tag on the tread. Nice all terrian tires. SO I called him and said "you want to sell both sets? He said sure. 650.00, well the other set has to be atleast 600.00 new and they are all brand new just been sitting and not getting used. I was just going to say yes, but decided to deal some more. I told him I did just drive 4hrs round trip to come get them and burned some gas money to do so. I told him I had some crispy 100's and he saidhow many? I told him 5 and they would be out of his hair! He paused for about 20 secs and said sure! Take them, just send me a pick when you get your samurai done. So I stashed the money. Loaded both sets and home I came! Got them put on today. What a killer deal and they fit perfect and I have a brand new set od 30's as well!

So that bring me to 4143.00 for the project! I saved a ton of money when dealing and am very happy with the end result!

The only things I will be doing now is making a winch plate and mounting a winch and building a spare tire mount.

First pic is before. The next pick is done with all the upgrades. The last is all done with the new shoes!!!

I now have a 4x4 monster that will go just about any place and I don't have to worry about scratches or dings

Considering that I ALMOST BOUGHT A 12K RANGER and put another 4 k in acc on it. I am very happy. I have a highway legal rig and it will haul me and my clients or family and friends around with ease!

Oh and the insurance for the ranger was going to be like 700 a year. Plud jack my outfitter insurance way up. The get nervouse when you start packing clients on atv's and raise your rates. The samurai with full coverage is 37.00 a month!!!! Liabilty is only 20, but I went with full. Plus no rate jacks on my outfitter insurance!!!

For sure white is not a good color to be hunting with Unless there is snow on the ground I like the blacked out look. Also rattle canned the whole under side to take out the white.

Carp you No good SOB! you were telling me what a puss i was for telling you to get a geo tracker/ suzuki side kick!  I know the samuri is better  but i guess i wasn't so far off the mark HUH? 

 
Nice ride you got an great deal on the ride and the tires. I have a set of 33x95015 in the BFG mud AND cooper deans for my ride as well, they dont make the BFG in a MT in that size anymore. congrats!

the tire combo you have is great for a hunting rig... just big enough and skinny enough to keep the mileage good.  If you get the tag give me a shout!

I was thinking a sawz-all and some aftermarket fender flares would go with the theme nicely.

The guy I bought it from had another one that was done up as a crawler. It had the tube frame and like 43" irok tires on it. The things was a beast but would have been heavy as hell. Not a down the road rig. My big ranch is about 30 mintues from my house. So I will drive it back and fourth more then likely.

Thanks I am happy with it. I might build a bumper around the wench as well. I think I am going to get a 8k wench. That should yard it out of about anything. If I do get it stuck it would be very very stuck

Yeah I was thinking a 4 or 6 since it comes in at just under 3k. But there is not much $ between a 8k and a 6k. So might as well go a little bigger

This shows the tire clearance a little better even though I am still standing above it.

It also has some pretty stiff shocks in it! It would take a good thump to get them to come up far enough to touch it.

Hey Carp, nice rig!  Is that a stock motor, and gearing?  If so, how fast can you get it to go with those big diameter tires?  I just bought a twin sammy to yours, white as well, on Sunday.  Only difference is mine is an 88, so it's carburated, and it has a cargo rack that covers the whole soft top.  I have 31x10.5's, and haven't got to open it up yet on the highway.  It'll do 60 for sure, but I doubt much more, it's running stock gearing.

I want to follow your post, maybe add to it some as I work on mine.  I think we could come up with some good hunting rigs.  I'm adding front and rear receivers so I can put my M8000 Warn on either end, putting a "floor" in the cargo rack so I can set small packs, etc on the roof, tied down, a hi-lifter jack on the roof rack (since mine has no jack with it).  Small 12V air compressor for airing down tires then refilling when necessary.  An additional 12V cigarette lighter for more plug ins.   A tow bar so I can "hitch" a ride over to deer camp, or lend out my rig to my dad when he does his out of state hunting.  Jerry can mount for some extra gas.  Oh, and one more dome light, I'm getting used to having more lights in vehicles, this thing seems so dim inside at night!  Feel free to holler if you have questions, I've been doing a bunch of research on these the last few yrs, just now took the plunge!

The 32x11.50's that came on it were all shot to hell and missed matched. I got his out on the road after puttting the 33's on. I got it up to 55 and then it was not wanting to run much faster with the new 33's. It also like to run at about 50 in 4th rather then 55 in 5th.

I think I am going to weld a 2" hitch reciver on the front bumper. Then I can make a winch plate to take a winch on and off. It will also let me put a rack on the front to pack a critter around if I wanted. By just pulling the winch off and sliding the basket in.

Great..........thanks Carp.........I saw a Zuki at Costco today and the old motor head wheels started turning  It was nice looking too man.....  I envisioned some bigass tires, a 6 inch lift with a full cage, front and rear air lockers, quad shocks up front, a big ass winch .......... Then I saw a decked out and chromed 400hp Chevy small block, some outrages flames, deep mud and a hot blonde with big  Then POW my wife said something about dog food and I woke the hell up   

We got into the Subaru and left.............. shhhhit!!

There had been a realy nice sami in the seattle craigslist that was totally set up for $6500.  I think it had a motor swap (tracker motor) too.  It was totally build and ready for hitting trails but still street legal and very driveable.  It was running on 33x10.5's.  If I had room for it, it would have found a new home, but just can't cram another rig in here and already have a moderately set up Pathy
