Late season archery tactics
« on: September 13, 2012, 03:55:15 AM »
This is my first year going for elk seriously.  I headed out opening day down south not far from st helens.  First spot and 3 days later and had only seen 3 elk that were spooked by the ATV's.  Decided to change it up and the last two days I was able to call 3 elk in within 10 yards but being a novice my little mistakes in my setup cost me a shot opportunity.

I am really dedicated to getting an elk this year and plan to hunt late season.  I had luck bringing them in with a calf distress.

Just wondering what tactics people use during late season archery?  I know the rut is done but do they respond to calls still in particular the lost calf call?  If not is it strictly just spot and stalk or ambush ?

Your probably going to be better of not warning them in late season trying to call.
Ive been at it for a few years and spot and stalk works.

Best to cover lots of miles and be accidentally in front of them when they come through.
You can how ever sneak up on them feeding if the wind is good and weather is nasty. Lots of cover helps.
Good luck this year.
No if ands or Buts just Maybee.

I dont call at all in the late season, im always burnin leather and glassing then do a stalk or find a heavily used ridge or drainage they use and set up on it.
