First Muley Pics

Just started playing with my trail cam (Bushnell Trail Sentry).

Finally got pictures of some deer (mostly cows up to now). 

This buck will get shot at if he gives me the chance.  I have not yet killed a muley.  He looks like a good one to start out with.

I think I would wait on shooting that buck...   He looks like a two year old.  There are much bigger mulies in this state, that would be taking a buck wayyy before maturity.

I agree that we need to consider age and attemp to let bucks reach maturity but there are a few things to consider.

1. He stated that he has never killed a buck. What a great first buck this would be.
2. Attempting to allow animals to reach maturity in this state on public land is a pipe dream. If you dont shoot the next guy in line will I gurantee.
3. Even though he is young he doesnt look to have the genetics to be great. ie. pinchers.

After a few bucks under you belt you might rethink shooting him. For your first buck, I'd love to see a picture of you with that buck in about a week when archery opens.

Okay fellas, let me clear the record a bit on this one.

1) This is not on the west side; it is a sagebrush mule deer.

2) I am hunting with a recurve bow for my FIRST mule deer.  I have not killed one before.

3) This is a public land deer, and this area is NOT a trophy-type area.

4) I saw a mountain lion chasing some deer less than 300 yards from this spot.

I figure he is a nice buck (for me), and I should kill him before the kitty does!!!  If I wanted a mature buck, I would pass on him.  My goal is to kill a MULE DEER, so I am not really being picky here.  I doubt I could be convinced to let him walk.

Well Silky, maybe you should let that LEGAL bull walk IF you get your crosshairs on him again. You know, he'll be a LOT bigger next year. That's why we don't have any monsters on the west side of the state!!!  Everyone's idea of a trophy is different. Some guys shoot legal animals and some hold out for the BIG ones. Some guys shoot Canadas and greenheads and some guys shoot buffleheads , mergansers and spoonies. Ya get my drift yet??? To each his own.

Spokane i want to hear the story of you holding back on the first legal buck you see this year If i remember right you get the shakes the first time. Its harder then you think when its your first time. You are older though and know what a nice buck looks like so i will give you credit there.

I remember my first day of deer hunting...We decided for the morning hunt we would head up to a wheat field of my grandpas up Mill Creek outside of Walla Walla and then return back to the ranch(Waitsburg) to hunt the lower wheat fields the rest of the day. We enter the field before dawn and planned out our positioning, the field was atop of a huge hill(Foothills of the Blues). There was a massive draw/canyon that ran up and emptied into the field. Just before dawn we position ourselfs, spread out about 50 years apart, along side the draw. Being the "little kid" they stuck me at the tip of the draw where it flatened out and empties into the field. Day light comes and theres all kinds of movement and action going on. Other hunters hunting up the mountain through the draw, which is public land, have got the dear moving up the draw  . Out of our hunting party we end up getting one dear....i had stood pretty much in the same spot for over 45 minutes while all this was going on. Then i got this thought...ya know i cant see the very tip of the draw where it enters field, so i take 4 steps northeast so i can peer over the lip and see the bottom(which was only like 4 feet at this point before entering field) as soon as i got the the edge a HUGE 6x6 mulley jumps up stares at me for like 15 second which felt like a minute then starts bookin it across the wheatfield. Me being young at the time i start yelling Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Dad over and over(LOL) i then pull up my rifle shaking like no other, find the dear in my scope and manage to get one round off before he was over the horizon


I learned 2 things that day:

1.Always be aware whats around you, big smart bucks will bed down like there is no tommorrow. I was maybe 10 yards from the deer for over 45 minutes. Even with the rest of the family shooting near by, this deer did not flush till pretty much stepped on.

2.The second one was told to me real quick that morning by my dad, grandpa, uncle's. JUST SHOOT!!!! There is no need to yell to get our attention, once you start shooting you will have our attention. In the time it took for me to get their attention pull my rifle up(shakes and all) the deer had gone from jumping up and standing looking at me in shock for about 15 seconds at 10 yards away to ~200 yards at a dead run before i could get a shot off.

Perfect first deer, great trophy for a recurve. A deer like that is a great confidence booster for the next year when you are looking at that monster, you'll draw with no ideas in your head about equipment or skills because you have one under your belt. Pick your shot, shoot straight and have a great season ! Mike

I’ll shoot whatever I want to, I sure don’t need your blessing or advice.  You hunt your way and as long as it is legal, I’ll make no judgments on you.

You can attack me all you want and be a smart ass but that doesn't change the facts, which is that my statement is valid.

The point is, he is on the East side.  Where there are still a lot bigger bucks.   Yes, to each his own, but I know in my area of elk, a 4 point elk is large, plus with the elk success rate at just under 10% unless you are on a special gmu (margaret, peaches) why wouldn't you take him.  Elk is a different story compared to deer.  On the east side he is a small 4 point, while I understand it will be his first muley ect ect, whatever.  I would just expect people on this site to be more apt to encouraging patience, which is a INTEGRAL part of hunting IMO.  I would not bash someone for taking this deer, but I would definetely encourage them to wait it out.

There a couple reason I may hold out for a bit.  First, there are 3 really nice bucks that come through that we have regular pics of on trail cam.  Second, I have a multi-season tag and while I'll probably end up taking a deer next month, it won't be the end of the world.  I totally hear you about the shakes.  I was shaking like a leaf when I got my turkey this year.  Best of luck WArookie.  You'll make the right decision when the time comes.
