Toutle Area Cow Tag
« on: September 22, 2012, 10:06:56 AM »
Good morning guys,  I'm new to hunting the west side, usually have hunted to bumping-manashtash area's but this year my buddy convinced me to hunt on the west side.  Anyway, we drew a cow tag on a group hunt for the toutle region. (muzzle season) I went down scouting last weekend and the only thing we could have access to was the state land. (fire danger)  We made our way up the 4250 rd and ended up at the 5 corners where it ties into the 3000 line rd.  I thought this looked like a good enough area to set up base camp and hunt out of there.  Does anyone have recommendation's on this area or should we be more focused on the southern part of the unit down by the 6600 rd or down by Cougar?  Sure would love a little assistance as neither of us have hunted here in the past.  Is there a chance that warehouser will open the gates to their land in early October?

Thanks for anyone taking the time to reply.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post pics of 3 BIG COW's DOWN!!!

I seriously doubt that Weyerhaeuser will be open by October 6th. It would take a lot of rain for that to happen, and it's not in the forecast.

You are lucky that Weyerhaeuser is allowing access to the state land. That will be your best bet.

One problem that I would have with camping in the five corners area is that a lot of 4x4ers like to run around up in that area. There is a lot of good areas to hunt on the state land. I would suggest areas down close to the river, and area that have limited road access. If memory serves me correctly the 3000 line is the boundary between Toutle and Loowitt unit, so know the boundaries.

I've been hunting the southern part of the unit this week (archery cow tag).  Haven't had any success getting close to any cows.  I have called in a 6 pt and two 5 pts into range with cow calls but no cows have followed any of the bulls.  The elk are heading for thick cover at first light so spot & stalking hasn't worked out.  There is also a ton of active logging happening on the state land so it might be better hunting the state land to the north.

Thanks for the posts guys.  I'm going down scouting again this weekend.  Think I'm gonna check out the south end of the unit and if we have time sneak up into the north end.  Looks like we might have some rain coming in next week, so that would be a welcome relief to take the snap crackle pop out of the woods.  If werehauser's gates are closed, does that mean we can't walk in?

Pray for rain...

Will post again when we get back to let you know what I come up with.

usually if there closed you can walk behind the gates but can't drive.
Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

The gates being closed really means nothing. You have to call and listen to the message to find out whether their land is open for public access or not. When it's open for access, even an open gate doesn't necessarily mean you can drive in.

We'll be camped up off the 6600 rd after the hairpin corner and the first left you can take to the dead end road.  I've been told to hunt the clear cuts in the morning and evening's, so I figured I just set camp up on one and hunt outa camp the first few days.

Stop in for a beer if anyone is interested in swapping info, we are in a 16x24 wall tent.

Good luck everyone
