Peninsula bears? Were are they all hiding?!!!!
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:10:28 PM »
Hey guys, I know I barely ever post, but most of the year I'm working on a boat in Alaska and don't have internet access. I check the site every chance I can.

I'm living in the Port Ludlow area currently an have week nights an weekends off, some weekdays too. I have been back now for a couple weeks and been hitting it pretty hard every chance I get looking for a bear. I'd love to get one but I'm not even finding much sign. Focusing on the Toandos Peninsula mainly, and have driven around on some of the FS roads near Quilcene, thinking maybe I should go more west? I have a fox pro I was planning on calling with once I find some likely looking areas, but I'm just not seeing the bear sign anywere. Am I concentrating on the wrong area? Should I spend the weekends out past PA? Looks like there is still some berries kicking around. I would just be excited to see some fresh promising sign, gets frustrating, but I like the challenge. Any help or pointers is greatly appreciated!

I was out just south of Ludlow Today, I was in the Coil and saw a nice Bear.  The wife worked today so I took my two year old out to change the SD card in my camera.  I always carry a .25 plus caliber firearm when any modern season is open but today....... I decided that I would grab my .22 Mag for grouse.  Turns out we saw a nice Bear.  He let me look him over long enough to contemplate .....We'll leave it at that.  There's alot of them there, I've seen two driving too and from my hunting spots since June.  Maybe I should move my spots. :chuckle:
We could say [Democrats] spend money like drunken Sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken Sailors. It would be unfair, because the Sailors are spending their own money.

Well I hit it hard all weekend long, and today I decided to take a drive out past PA. Hiked up into a random area an found some old sign but nothing to get very excited about. Pretty noisy out there, hoping for some rain!

Girlfriend and I went for a drive tonight to try out a new pair of binoculars and a new spotting scope.  1st spot we stop at to glass she sees a bear.  We watched him  for about 1/2 hour.  Looked to be a fairly good size bear.  We're going to go back for the next couple nights and see if he is using the same unit nightly.  It's kind of a tough place to get into.  No shot oppurtunity from the side we were on.  But there is a way to come in above him on the other side.    Good optics sure make a difference.  I've never had real good optics but this year I sprung for a pair of ZenRay Prime.  And got a Nikon spotter.   What a difference.
