Has to be bear scat right???
« on: September 30, 2012, 03:27:49 PM »
I harvested my deer on Thursday and came back two days later to find 4 rather large piles of scat.  I can't seem to think they would be from anything else but I'm sure you guys will have good input.  To me doesn't look like cougar, and too small for bobcat coyote or any other small game.  Thoughts?  All the same bear or several, and size ?

Also I have my bear tag and would love to shoot one but know it is illegal to bait.  Am I correct to assume a deer gutpile is still considered bait?  And if so how far from that area would I have to be to legally/ethically hunt the bear?

Pics are a little fuzzy on my screen especially number 3; but I'm going to guess that numbers 1,3, and 4 are cattle and the number 2 pic is bear.

Forgot to mention this is fairly residential. No elk for sure and no cattle fOr sure. Only could be bear, small game or possibly dog but none of it looks like dog crap I've seen.

It is in an area with grass do no paw prints are vIsible I already checked. Unless there is the biggest dog in the world I can't see it being anything but bear but maybe dOgs can crap tht big? I'm guessing no berries as it seems to be eating the gut pile from the deer.

How far do you have to be from bait or gut pile to be legal to hunt if this is indeed a bear ?

A gut pile isn't considered baiting so you can hunt bear right on top of it if you choose to do so. But is there anything left?

Do you think this is a big bear or did it just eat a lot of guts and crap a LOT?

Also possible it's multiple bears with 4 scat piles in a short time ?

Didn't know if it could be a diff small game animal or a neighborhood dog. Even a coyote that ate a lot and had runny crap. Just wanted a second opinion. Just know it can't be elk or cattle where I live. Also the fact it came after a gut pile was present makes me believe a predator. Sorry if I offended you by providing more info .

Taste it, if it has a subtle hint of ripe berries with some aromas of carrion and finishes smooth not to chunky, then most likely a 2012 vintage of yogi...
If it is smooth and creamy but has that aroma of fresh cut grass and finishes with a hint of wet cobb, then most likely bovine in nature, still too young and needs to age a bit.
If it is very dark and mysterious, hints of squirrel, housecat and oposumm and finishes with a hint of well wet dog, then mosty likely coyote..
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.
