223 grain
« on: October 03, 2012, 07:21:34 AM »
Think it's big enough to pummel an elk?  That is what I've been practicing with and I've gotten pretty decent.  I honestly hadn't thought much about elk hunting this year except that I keep spotting them in the area I'm hunting.... That would be a lot of meat in the freezer....

In a center fire - yes!  In a ML I would prefer to be much heavier unless you can get one in the perfect range and perfect conditions - especially a bull.  If that 223 is an all lead bullet that might make it even more questionable...

This is not going to help you but this is what I use for elk... but with it I am prepared to shoot and elk to 200 yards if the condition are right...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

How heavy are those??

.458-305 grains....

But if you wanted to go lighter they do make another bullet that I consider a great all-around bullet...

It is a .458-275 grain Bloodline

Both of these are premium bullets and do hurt the pocket book when you first buy them - but when you see them work... wow

Might look at  this thread...

i used the 275 grain bloodlines this year for the first time based on sabotloaders recommendation.  they are a very good bullet.  i shot a whitetail doe  on my antlerless tag that was quartering hard to me through the front left shoulder and out just behind the last rib and she dropped right where she stood.  the following day i dropped a 2x3 mule deer in its tracks from 70 yards with a shot to the neck.  the bloodlines fly really well out of my gun (knight disc) and had 2-3 inch groups at 160 yards off the bench.  i used 120 grains of 3f and was about 4 inches high at 100 yards and 4 inches low at 200 yards.  just point and shoot!
