Boomwhop's 2012 Muzzy Hunt 4 Bucks Down
« on: October 08, 2012, 08:52:22 PM »
This year is going to be a fun one, Boomwhop Jr. and I took Hunters Ed together this year and this will be his 1st year.  Boomwhop Jr. is 15 but has very little hunting experience.  He has played tackle football every year from Aug. 1st- mid November.  Last year he had a bad concussion during football and missed most of the year of football and almost all of hunting season.  This spring he got dinged again during spring football and as a family we decided to hold him out for a year.  This family decision was very hard on him but the silver lining is that made it possible to take Boom Jr. for a week with me to hunt.

Day 1 the drive
We picked Boomwhop Jr. up from High School at 2:30 pm and took off.  (We being Boomwhop and Scotta from this sight)  The drive over to our hunting spot always seems to be interesting....
Lucky we were not involved in this wreck.  It did look like someone heading hunting or camping.

Hopefully you won't have to pull any Dodges out of ditches this year.  ;)

Day 2 opening day
Boom Jr was very excited, hunting camp was filled with stories of 3x2's 3x4's and 4x4's everywhere in our hunting unit.  My dad and uncle had been glassing and had already been in camp for a couple of days.  There was even the rumor of a huge 5x5 30 inches plus.    Well opening day came and went with no shots at any deer.  We did fire off a couple of shots at some coyotes, but missed.  Great day lots of fun.

Day 3
Welcome blisters.  Saw lots and lots of deer,  jumped the one in the photo but could not put 3 points on one side and it got away.  Where the hell are all the big bucks we were told about???  Good news is the new cots from cabela's rock and the beer is cold.  Sunny and hot...  No shots even at coyote's today.

Day 4-Worlds thinest Coyote
Hunted hard all day, jumped a nice one 4x3??? but just saw head and horns.  Deer then jumped a fence took a left and ran across the sky line broad side.  :bash:  Boom Jr did good and did not shoot....  But it was hard.  No good shot or safe shot presented.   We did see a unique Coyote though I think it was ran over by a steam roller.  Ended the day watching 2 Bucks at 230-250 yards  How big do you think they are???  Looked good through the Big Eye, took a photo via the eye phone.  Talked all night on whether or not we should have shot...

:yeah: To bad you were not able to see that 3rd point on the first buck. The ones in the scope look pretty nice! Good luck!

Yes that one is a small 3x2 but we couldn't see that point for sure. Now on the 2 bucks in the spotting scope both legal 230 yards down hill 5-10 mph cross wind. Do you shoot? Which one and hold over?  100 grains 777 225 grain bullet. It was a big discussion at camp that night. If the bucks are there at daylight what to do???

Day 5
So after a night full of second guessing we head back to the canyon with the two bucks.  The bucks are right where we left them.  Well we glass the heck out of them and use the range finder 225-230 yards.  Boomwhop Jr REALLY wants to take a shot.  Well, laying down using the bi-pod, my sonn takes aim, I watch thru the Spotting scope as he lets smoke fly.  To my shock the bigger of the two bucks does a back flip and falls off a ledge.  The other bucks don't even spook and just stare at where the down buck went and look confussed.  I hand my son my gun and start to reload his and tell him to be ready for a follow up shot.  I am so exiced that I don't even care that the second buck is just walking across the side hill.  After 30-40 seconds his buck is still not in view and my brother takes aim at the other buck and fires, cap goes bang but gun does not...WTF he puts a secod cap on and this one goes bang but the shot is a hang fire and he misses big.  I finish reloading my sons gun and range the second buck, 219 yards.  I throw out the bi-pod and settle down on the walking buck (I am thinking nice 3x2) and since we will be there all day with one deer why not... Aim at his back and whistle at him, he stops and I shoot---Boom----whop down he goes flips over twice and that is it.   Wow  Father Son double header in 2 minutes.   I can't tell you guys how cool it was to see my 72 year old Dad and my son charging down the hill after his 1st deer...
