I have been very successfull rattling blacktails. I have luck starting as soon as thier horns harden......late September thru the end of the year. I have better luck rattling from just inside the timber.

Now, I know this was whitetails, but last year in Idaho dad and I rattled in about ten bucks in a week.  I got a nice three point that way.

I would rattle hard, crashing and banging them together for three to five minutes, then rest and grunt, resting for about three to five mins.  Then I'd do it again, mixing between crashing rattling and tickling.

I plan on trying it for blacktails this year, we'll see how it goes.

Last season, friend and I went on our first late season whitey hunt. Got on some good property by newport. Set up a scent line down a lil path through the thick brush. Neither of us had rattled before but my friend just started clashing em for a minute and then waiting about 3-5... Crash em and rub em in dirt... No more than 10 minutes a nice 4X4 ran up to us and WHAM i got my first WHITEY buck!

Guess just go out and try it... I don't think it has to even sound perfect if they are rutting hard enough.

I rattled up my first archery buck in 06 and he was a 150 but he came in and there were already 2 smaller bucks about 30 yrds away and he was ready to tear there heads of, he was all puffed up and posturing, but I didn't give him the chance. My advice is to rattle very lightly (tickle them together). most bucks don't want to fight another buck if they think it is bigger than they are. Last year I had 2 buck sparring right under my tree stand and you could hardly hear them, 20 minutes or so later a 145 came in and I got him. so my advice is go light and grunt occasionaly, I use the primos buck roar and the rubber neck but I don't get too carried away. Every 20 min. or so. I have only found it effective for the pre rut
