RUST!!!
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:40:30 PM »
Hey all I have a question and am in need of good advice! After deer hunting in the rain Saturday the barrel on my Savage 30-06 is showing some rust. When I purchased it used it had some but I cleaned it off and used a blue pen since at this time I can't afford to have it blued . The inside of the barrel and bolt are rust free. How do I get it cleaned up and prevent it from happening again? Thanks in advance!

You can use a true copper penny.  One minted before 1957 (I believe).

A little oil and some fine steel wool.

would a piece of zinc work?

get some barricade. they sell it at wholesale. I live near the salt water and have been fighting rust on my guns my whole life. I wipe them down with barricade and keep them in a silicone gun sock at all times when not in use and so far no rust. I also have a rag soaked with barricade in a jar in my truck for wiping down my guns after a wet day in the field.

A true gun nut friend of mine recommended this...break free clp oil... he says it is what the military uses... rub it in with soft cloth, not steel wool (just what he said) ... I did this and it worked great for me... good luck... not sure where he got it...

Yes, use some break free CLP  or even mobile 1 and rub the penny on the rust spot and they will come right off!  You want to use an all copper penny as the copper is softer than the steel and won't effect your blue.  Do not use steel wool for this reason, it will rub off your blue.

I have a model 700 that is older than dirt and looks like it.  It is my favorite gun but will rust up.  I have used the penny on it many, many times.  I have also used it on my blued 1911 which i mistakenly wore to the beach in Westport.

I bought a silicon impregnated gun cloth quite a few years ago.  It's in its own ziplock bag.  I rub everything down with it at the end of the day or before storing at the end of the season.  I haven't seen rust since I got it.  If you have a wood stock you should take the barrel and action out, before the season, and seal the wood in the channel so water cant absorb into the wood and either affect your accuracy or cause dampness against the metal.

He made grass and trees and mountains and a horse to be a friend
And trails to lead ol' cowboys home again

Crush the end of an empty brass flat in a vise... the brass can be used to scrape the rust off.  It will leave a small amount of brass on the gun.  Then take a soft bristle brush and some bore cleaner, scrub off the brass, then apply oil.   Until you get the gun blued or Parkerized or coated in something permanent, it will surface rust on you.   Just make sure you wipe it down good, and keep it oiled when not in use.

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Can always coat the metal with some  car wax like Turtle Wax or such.  Will waterproof the metal with no damage to the finish and is not permenant.
