Was thinking of going there this year for a spike - looked at the harvest report for last year and see not many people go there but success rate is decent. Why so few hunters - extremely rugged country, so far from the masses of people, not a lot of elk around?  Any info would be great!

It's too steep to pack a spike out of.  Unless you want to pay top dollar to access 4/0 land for a spike.  And it's steep.  Most of the elk herd is on private land.  And it's steep everywhere else.  But it is possible to find one around on public land, but it's steep.

Oh and BTW... There are no elk in the Blue Mountains. Wolves and Sasquatch ate them all!

Talk about frustrating; buddy had a bull tag for archery this year: ate it after hunting hard every day, and these are on private well posted land:

I seen about one spike a day when I was over there. It can be a good unit for spikes but. It would suck to get a spike in there if it snowed. There are no ski lifts just trails. Im in real good shape and it wore on me after about 5 days of hunting in there. I would never do what I did for a spike.

It's possible but man you gotta want a spike bad to go in there for it. I'll be in there monday for a big bull tag and just from looking at it there is no way id go on there for a spike. but for a big bull... ill hike till my legs quit working! I think you'd be better off in the dayton or tuccannon area. Like anywhere there will be other hunters but something always gets pushed around.

During archery i was the caller for a friend that had a big bull tag and i could shoot spikes. After five day's of hunting in there i told my self know way would i shoot a spike unless it was low in the unit around the private stuff. We never did go down low were all the private land is. On day six when we were working a big bull in the bottom of one of many HELL HOLES i called a spike to 10 yrds and took several pictures of him, could have killed him easy. Later we called in a 7x7 bull and killed it. It took a day and a half to get him out. Plenty of elk up high but you need to work for them.
