Do bears scare away elk?
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:59:37 AM »
The last few weeks I had been getting some nice bulls on my trail camera, but this last week and a half all I got was one cow and a bear.  The bear was on here the last couple of days, walking through until he messed up my camera.  I was just wondering if bear scare away elk?  I had one picture of a cow flying through and then about 20 minutes later the bear came through.  My bull tag for modern opens in a few days and I thought I really had a spot.

Nope, had elk come in right after bears left on my cameras during early archery season.  Saw you other post.  Nice bulls.  Probably just all the rifle deer hunters wandering around up there that have the Bulls hiding out.  Hope your camera is in the thick and nasty stuff away from the roads.  If so, you should be fine.

:yeah: and Through sept and early October you might have been getting more bulls on camera because they were being very active trolling for hot cows. as they get farther out of the rut those bulls are going to find a hole and start resting and bulking up for winter so that could be a contributing factor. the bear might be a reason i suppose but ive got alot of bears and elk on the same camera without noticing that they effected each other.

Does'nt seem to effect them down here in Oregon, neither do Cougars. These are all off the same camera, same spot

In greenwater up in the high country I saw in two different areas a bear feeding with two bulls feeding in the same area that my bino's would cover, I only have 8x30's and it was only about 800 yards away. A different time I saw a bear feeding and a deer was above the bear looking at him about 20 yards away, I was watching from about 600 yards away. Neither the bear or deer looked alarmed or ran off.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

in my experience bears dont effect elk much, unless they start taking over an area. i have however had cats shut my areas down for a week at a time.

Seems to depend on the food source and age of calves.  When there is a lot of feed I've watched elk and bear feed in the same clearcut for weeks completely ignoring each other.  In years with poor feed I've called in a good number of bear with cow talk and the elk seemed much less calm during those years.  One year late in Oregon archery season I shot a cow out of a herd of about 20.  While my hunting partner and I were field dressing her the herd came back and ran right through where we were.  My partner grabbed his bow and took off after them.  As soon as he went out of sight a nice boar came trotting by at 20 yards.  He caught my movement and stopped just long enough for a Savora Swept-Wing 4 blade to rush through his heart. :IBCOOL:  I like bear and elk together - that's some fun right there!

Will bear run them completely out of the area?  I don't think so.  But, if feed and conditions are right they will chase them around and make them one heck of a lot harder to get close to.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Dang look at all those kitties...I need to hunt cats down there.
If you love something you will set it free, if it don't come home, hunt it down and kill it.
