Hunt Date: 9/9/12
West Side: Archery General Season

This Bull left his cows and was coming in bugling to a would be broadside shot, so upon him arriving at my shooting window I drew my bow back.  The bull then turned and froze quartering towards me (a bad bow shot) right as I was about to realease the arrow. 

Having never shot an elk before you can imagine what I felt like having this bull stare me down standing within 35 yards. Holding perfectly still already on my knees, I waited the bull out for 45 or so seconds with my bow at full draw hoping he wouldn't catch any movement. He finally began moving on his original path so I let the arrow fly with the propper broadside shot.

The shot was little further back than I had hoped so I ran parallel to the bull hoping for a second shot and sure enough he froze facing me head on, dipping his head below a small tree to get a look at me, so I realeased another arrow. "THWACK!". With his head dipped low to the ground I had hit him in his left antler (see the mark on his left G4).  That got him running again and but luckily he dropped 30 or so yards later.

I forgot to add that this elk went 585 lbs in the meat locker.  We cut 4"to 5" thick chunks of fat out of him in the field.

As for the fat... Out of 13 elk Ive never really seen maybe more that .1" thick of fat on an elk before. Can they really gain that much body fat??? (Serious question) Sound like a Wal-mart elk then.  :dunno:

I should have taken picks of the fat chunks.  My hunting partner who has many, many, elk kills under his belt said he had never seen anything like it as we were cleaning it out.  Below is another photo of him that shows his body size a little better.

Likewise...never seen that much fat before on an elk except for this year my bull had a ton.  Was easy a few inches thick on his hind quarters

Thats crazy. Make it more of a pain cleaning/cutting the meat? What about taste? More fat more flavor? Either way great food!
