Salted deer hide
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:11:10 AM »
I'm looking for advise on what to do next.  I have already caped, fleshed, turned the ears, lips, nose and eyes and salted my hide.  It has been about 2 weeks now since I salted it.  How long can it stay in this condition?  I would like to tan it myself but am not sure what type of tanning solution to use.  I was looking at Krowtan.  Any feedback that that product?  Any advise would be great.

Never used the Krowtan, but if you follow the directions, should be fine. I used the brush on tans many years ago with good results. Second deer I ever mounted is here in my office, from around 20 years ago.
Salted hide will keep a long time as long as you keep it good and dry.
We give your trophy that final compliment!

Cool, Thanks for the advice.  I have heard some good things about the Krowtan but just wanted to make sure.  My hide is stiff as a board, is that normal?  Do I need to do anything to it until I can get it tanned?
