Alright guys I need advice.
« on: November 04, 2012, 02:46:49 PM »

I am relatively new to duck hunting. I have gone for several years with my brother up where he lives and want to get going down closer to home. Which is the Spanaway area. I have no boat or dog, but do have some decoys and gear.

Where can a guy go without driving forever?

Are you military? Have you checked google earth? Seems like every pond around here that doesn't disappear in the summer is holding ducks pretty well. It really is that easy. On base is easy too. The biggest problem is other people around here. Seems it just gets crazy crowded some saturdays. Sundays are always empty but they're usually not as much action as saturdays.

Driving is part of the game. You have to find them to hunt them.

I do not have any advise for places to go.  But, I do have some advise for the waterfowl hunter with no boat or dog.

When I lived in Oregon I lived right on the Siletz Bay.  My neighbor was 80 something and would sit on his dock during duck season and pound the heck out of the buffleheads that would crews by.  He often asked me to join him, but he would not allow me to bring my dog.  He said it was much more fun that way.  The reason was he had a 44" remote controlled replica of a coast guard 44 motor lifeboat.  Dump a bird in the water and send out the boat to push it back to the dock.  He told me, "Why should all the fun stop when the birds hit the water?"

Now when I retire I hope to have a house on some duck water with a dock and a remote control boat.  That's the good life right there!  Pull the crab pots before you walk back into the house.  Clean ducks while eating crab and drinking a few cold beers.  What more can you ask for in a retirement?  But, no reason I can think of to keep you from getting an RC boat before you retire.  Especially when it does work darned good for retrieving ducks when you don't have a dog.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
